Yes, there are map mods (mostly they increase the area of the map which is visible, but some add more colours).

On the road between the IC and Bravil.

The skill reversal i meant was how ic1male described, if you put the skils you use all the time as your major skills you would level up very quickly but you would not get the full 5 point stat bonues so you would be level 10 but with level 1 strength for example. In the vanilla version all the monsters would level up with you so you would get spanked by a level 10 rat as your stats would still be so low.

Thats why I choose the skills I don't use as much as my majors, that way I level up slower, with more multipliers.
I started doing that after my first game, it was a joke trying to walk down a path and meeting a monster that could kick my ass at every turn.

The moons mod looks great, they did that with morrowind

Hrm, I am level 7 now and am starting to struggle a bit with some of the enemies, although not to the point where I am almost beaten to death. Has made me think as when I level I get some attributes as +2 when I pick them... is this what you're all on about?

So basically, all the skills I use all the time (blade, sneak, athletics etc) would be better off as minors?

Yes, that would mean you level up much slower.

There are also a lot of mods that can help in your situation, one is a mod that enables +5 modifiers all the time where you would normally only get +1 or +2, it is here: http://www.tessource.net/files/file.php?id=2691

But you could call this cheating so only use it if you are sure you want it.

As Dutch Guy said Yes. Some of the mods are better balanced and you could say they are not cheating. However I have the direct2drive version so most mods will not work on mine. :(
But the way I do it works well for me ;)

As well as that, skills like conjuration that I normally struggle to increase when it's a minor does much better as a major

How is everyones FPS in this game?

struggling a bit :( but im a level 11 barbarian, so can't be that hard!

spec:

A64 3000 venice
X1950 PRO
2 Gb RAM

running default settings, but changed from 640x480 to 1024x768

everything is up high/on distance wise, 1/4 or 1/2 up the slider bars

walking around i get 60 fps
in fights i get 10 fps (where i need it most!)

most of the fights are playable though

would it be easier if i started a new thread just for perfomance?

You could start a new thread, it may get you more replies as I doubt very many people look back in here much, but I may be proven wrong. :D

However before you start a new thread try dropping your grass distance and detail, this makes a big difference if your problems are in the great outdoors.

There will I expect also be a number of mods for performance improvements. Although I don't know about them as I can't mod my version.

Oblivion isn't the kind of game that requires high fps but I think I would have issues with it going as low as 10 :(

Very good fps thanks to my overclocked 8800GTS :D

What I did when I had a 7800GT is I read the Oblivion guide on Tweakguides and messed around a bit with the settings and tweaks.

I think I disabled all shadows, did the iMingrass size tweak, set the grass slider to ~50% and that allowed me to run 1280*1024 HDR/4xAF at ~25fps in fights.

Keep the mod suggestions coming in :)

I tried:

"Where's my horse"
"Saddlebags"
"Book jackets" or whatever it's called
"Keychain"
Also a face texture mod which looks much better than vanilla Oblivion.

I'm really impressed with the quality of the workmanship so far. What's this OOO mod all about? From what I read I'm not so sure I'll like it?

Also I'm looking for a better UI as I find everything to be too big and hate having to scroll around so much. Is DarkUI the only one about?

I tried the OOO mod but some of the Imperial Guard had missing textures so I installed 'Francesco's Levelled Creatures and Items' mod instead. I must get the 'Where's my horse' mod as I have had the problem of finding my gee gee. 'Saddlebags' seems to me to be a cheat so I wont be installing that.

Well as my horse actually has the saddlebags on him it doesn't seem a cheat to me. But horses for courses :D

Well my horse has now disappeared because I removed the official 'Horse Armour' mod. Oh well...I'll have to save up for a new one. (The one I had was from the priory).

I don't suppose the saddlebags are really a cheat as long as they don't carry an insane amount. Quite logical that you'd have them. Didn't really think that through. :o

Why does everything look the same in this game? ie just trees and grass everywhere. Are there any desert or snow areas or something?

There's definitely snowy areas...don't know about desert.

Oops: didn't see the above post.

Essential mods

Unofficial oblivion patch

Toasters legendary mastery (stats + bonus's over 100)

Stealth Overhaul (OBSE)

Mighty Magic (more useful magic system for harder difficulty players)

Francesco's (sorts oblivions leveling/loot system out a little)

Also use some of the performance mods, such as, lower poly grass "OPO" , short grass, spells no lighting

and tweak mods, quest award leveling, no merchant barter chatter, marker explore, DEJ harvest, expanded hotkeys + spell delete, ANB_regen, saddle bags + darkened steel horse armor

without them Oblivion is a POS

It's also worth having a look at the UniqueLandscapes MODS.

They are dedicated overhauls for areas of Oblivion screnery and really do make the environments diverse.
Recommend them all, and I do believe they are working towards release of a desert section in the south west region.

* from memory the Beach one might have a few clipping issues, although that may now be patched.
