I think the ati x1800/1900's can use AA + HDR?

Not in Oblivion unfortunately. Even though the x1800/x1900 is capable of doing AA+HDR, due to the way HDR is coded in Oblivion, it will not allow it. All we can hope for is a future patch.

Quote taken from the official forums:

Yeah, Devs have already confirmed that HDR+AA will not be supported by Oblivion on any PC video chipset

I'm pretty annoyed at this. :(

Can you really make faces as good as this in oblivion??

I'll probably just use HDR, I never usually bother with AA.

Apparently there is another option... Bloom.

So we have the choice of:

HDR
AA + Bloom.

According to a lot of the members on the official forums the difference isn't all that noticable between Bloom and HDR in the case of Oblivion, with some people even stating that Bethesda's Bloom implementation seems to look more realistic. If that is the case then i'll be a happy bunny.

I have a 360 also, aswell as an HDTV but I still plan on getting the PC version for other reasons. Therefore I stick my tongue out at you sir! :p

What is confusing me however is that the X360 chipset is based on ATI's R520 chipset is it not? This is why the 360 version has both HDR and AA enabled. However the X1900 uses ATI's R580 chipset and should also be able to do it yet for some reason the PC version won't allow it. It almost seems deliberate.

Perhaps MS played a part in this? ;)

Here I am :p Well my plans for an all-night session didn't come to pass due to a splitting headache I'd had all day :( So I've really only played through the first section and had a mess around with the settings to try and find what's "playable" on my system (in sig). I tried to get some screenshots but it doesn't seem to want to do it for some reason.....I'll have another try in a bit :)

I'm playing at 1024x768...

Firstly, I thought they said you could have HDR and AA together in this game? It doesn't let you - it specifically says you can't have both if you try and select them

To be honest, my machine wouldn't be able to cope with both on anyways. HDR looks very nice but, of course, it really hammers the frame rate big time. So I'm trying to decide if I want no AA and HDR.....or get rid of the jaggies but lose a lot of the nice effects.

So far at least, it doesn't seem to be a RAM hog. I'm getting no disk thrashing in large outdoor areas. Hope it stays that way.

It's difficult to say how it will run at the moment. I've only just scratched the surface - I might get into town and find the whole thing slows to a crawl as it tries to apply HDR to all the buildings. Also, I've only played at night in the game......with not many trees around......once I hit a forrest during the day and it has to start drawing shadows left & right it might also come to a crashing halt :D

please tell us more my heart is racing!!!

OK, more on the performance...

HDR is nice, but bloom+AA is much better. I never used to be a fan of AA....but now everything looks horrid without it. I've found 2xAA with bloom looks nice and performance is much better than HDR/no AA.

Shadows have the next big impact on performance. Tree canopy shadows look nice and add to the realism factor, but they do hammer the framerate - and I haven't even got to a forrest yet :(

Draw distance is another biggy. You can drop it slightly and turn off "distant land" but it looks awful. You'll want it maxed I promise :) The landscapes are so big that you'll be getting some pop-up on grass and rocks, unless you max the draw distances on those out and lose more framerate.

Water also looks shoddy on anything other than high detail with reflections, although with all the water stuff maxed it looks stunning and doesn't bother performance too much.

Honestly, if you have anything less than a 6800 this game will make you cry....and then break the piggy bank :) It doesn't run smoothly on my system but I don't care (yet) because it's just so utterly gorgeous that I can't bring myself to lower the settings.....I'll settle for it to be a little choppy. I have no idea what my average fps is.....I would guess maybe around 35ish.

For those of you with current gen cards - you're gonna be knocked out ;)

Good news!

The 7800gt OC had better run it with a good bit of shadowing, 30fps should be fine for this type of game.

If it runs to poorly on my rig, then I will put it on a shelf until the next system

Hi Curio and thanks for the update :)

Have you tried taking screenshots with Fraps or suchlike? If you don't have it, I understand if you can't be ***** installing it :D

To all,
I think I may have caused confusion when I quoted someone who said HDR and AA will work together, I said at the time I didn't know how true this was!
