An Elder Scrolls: Oblivion thead

Quick question and might as well use this old thread.

I have been playing Oblivion again and basically doing every quest, faction, freeform quest before I do the main one as I felt the game was a little boring once the oblivion crisis was over.

Anyway I began the Thieves guild quests but I get infamy, which would be ok but I have finished Knights of the Nine and a 2 infamy rating disallows me to use this armour. Is there some sort of work around? I only can think of using a cheat to give myself 0 infamy when I finished the thieves guild quests. But that might mess with the game, i dunno but would rather try something else. Any ideas?

Really enjoying the game again now I am doing everything but the main quest, level 16 and not even met Baurus in town yet for the first missions. :D

I've recently started playing Oblivion and am not sure when I should be levelling up. I don't quite understand the progress bars and numbers by my maj/minor skills.

I read up a bit before making my char and managed to get +5 for all 3 stats at first level up but don't know when I will have increased my minors enough to get +4 or +5 again. How do I tell when it's time to spam use of my majors to get max stats for next level?

Also, I'm about 13 hours in - is level 2 about right for this amount of playtime? The difficulty slider is half way is that has anything to do with it.

Well to level it's actually easier than it appears.

Your major skills are the ones specific to your class, so for example I play a warrior (now level 24) and I have the major skills of blade, blunt, armourer, block and athletics oh and heavy armour.

Now these skills raise your level, each time you gain a skill in blade it adds towards your overall level progression. So the more major skills you level at one time, the quicker you will progress to the next level.

Basically the skills you use the most or want to use the most should be in the major skills (so pick a class you think you will like). I chose a warrior because I like to fight head on and use swords (blade) and shields (block).

Minor skills just ignore as they don't add much to your level increase, concentrate on major skills. So if you use a bow a lot, make marksmanship your main skill!

I also recommend when you found a class you like and can level with easily, do the main mission up to Kvatch then complete every other quest as it makes the game much more fun. I did the Daedric quests and you get awesome weapons and armour and when done them all you get +10 increase of certain skills (got 110 in blade for that!)

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I've read some places recommending you select the skills you use the most as minor skills.
As I understand it, the amount of stat bonus (strength endurance etc) you get at level up (+1 to +5) depends on the number of both major and minor skills you have raised. So this means you have to raise your minor skills to get the max bonus at level up.

Apparently if you don't get +4 and +5 you end up with a character who is weak for his level, and since enemies diffeculty is level-based it makes the game a lot harder?

I made a custom-class at the start who so far has a mix of magic and strength. Which stats should I be boosting at level up? At level 2 I took str endurance and intelligence I think.

It's called power-levelling, and it's not really needed. In general the importnat thing is to keep raising one weapon (but not marksman) and one armour skill so that both always go up with each level. But as you get more experienced, your armour gets better faster than most enemies - you should have a full set of good armour, they'll have a mixed bag.

If you plan to melee, the two main ones are endurance and strength. I raise luck at least every other round as well. If you are a proper mage, then intelligence and endurance are probably best, although a summoner might want willpower rather than endurance. Endurance governs the amount of extra health points you get per level and it is important to raise this as quickly as possible as the results stack, unlike the magicka increase from intelligence.

Once you can play a fair game, then you can experiment with pure summoners, pure mages etc.

I have the GOTY Edition on Steam and am unable to start a new game.

I click "New Game", select "YES" and nothing happens.

Have verified my game cache and deleted my Game doc folder to no avail.

Any ideas?

Many thanks.
