An Elder Scrolls: Oblivion thead

It's playable on my rig. 7700 OC, 9070XT, 1440p, 32GB. around 75fps

But I'd say you'd probably need DLSS scaling, if you get an extra 20fps that might be enough to go from bit unplayable to ok. What is your monitor resolution?

Engine limitation..it's UE

Standard 1440p. It's more the stuttering/hitching in outdoor areas as per DF video. No issue with 60fps in a game like this.

The difference with all ultra settings on my 4080 Super between 1440p and 4K is stark - with frame gen at 1440p getting around 130-140 FPS average and pretty rare to notice any latency or visual artefacts, 4K is another matter despite around 90 FPS average it feels laggy and you can see things warping, etc. as you turn around and I'd say it was unplayable really - definitely not an acceptable experience.

4K seems to play pretty poor even if I dial the settings down to get high frame rates with or without frame gen with noticeable UE stutter at times whereas 1440p just get the odd interstitial momentary hitch and mostly plays very smoothly.

They seriously need to sort out the lighting though, after awhile the hazy overcast flatness of it is a bit tedious - with other UE games like Hogwarts Legacy it can be compensated for somewhat with filters/reshade but doesn't go as far with this one.

I'd forgotten just how good and how bad this game is in equal measures - the lack of shortcut slot persistence for example is so bad.

I thought it was just me that was having this issue so I've just been ignorning it. It's worse outside in the open world but in delves/caves it's less problematic. I did try 1440p but it's not as sharp, so kept 4k but yeah, it's not smooth. I do think there is a memory leak of sorts as well, I feel performance degrades over time.

Im dipping in and out of it so far, runs great for me rig 7800X3D + rtx4070 with DLSS and FG im siting at about 135-150 fps 1440P ultra settings but i have it locked to 14o fps.

So far im playing stealthy archer as i always like bow gameplay in skyrim but im very curious how is the magic and melee combat ?

I use a mix of all three and enjoy them all.

Both are pretty good. Especially with enchantments on melee weapons.

I really like magic in Oblivion because you can craft your own spells, and mix and match effects you want.

I have a touch spell that does medium-sized DoTs for fire, frost and shock but also procs weakness to all three elements and to magic. The first touch stings. The second touch invariably kills if the enemy isn't highly magic resistant.

I have another variant with just fire and shock but with a 10ft AoE around my target for when I get swarmed. If you wanted to you could add an AoE paralyse for one or two seconds to make everyone fall over too. I need to level illusion more before that becomes sufficiently magicka efficient, though.

I also like to summon daedra and turn invisible if I feel like letting something else fight for me for a while.

You could use a nice fire DoT and turn undead in one spell for those annoying wraiths and ghosts.

When I really need to book it, I can get to 100% chameleon for 15 seconds with another spell.

I also have spells to boost my speed, athletics and acrobatics well over 100 for ludicrous speed.

That's before getting into trying out things like draining all enemies' fatigue or speed in a large area so they can't move, comboing fear spells with boosts to a target's speed, athletics and acrobatics so they fling themselves away from you in comic manner (I remember things like this from the OG, but not used them in the Remaster yet).

Magic is really great fun in this game!

Weirdly there might be a memory leak at 4K which isn't happening at 1440p for some reason but not sure it is the game itself - I've been playing about a bit and I can play for hours at 1440p without any performance issues but 4K is degrading over time slightly but that is carrying over to desktop even after I quit the game the mouse feels like 30Hz on desktop and you can see it isn't moving smoothly and other games have compromised performance even after a forced GPU driver restart, weird.

I am on 576.02 drivers though:

"The NVIDIA 576.02 driver, while generally stable, has been reported to have a significant memory leak issue, leading to performance issues and crashes, especially during extended gaming sessions."

So I probably should stick the hot fix on there and try again. Fortunately I've not had any of the driver issues with my 4080 Super which is plaguing some 5000 series owners.

Playing this again - I realised Bethesda have always made really boring games.

Oblivion and Skyrim have a lot of enjoyable stuff - what I find boring about them personally is the lack of information and/or well designed mechanics around certain things especially in Oblivion having to open and close the inventory constantly during combat if playing at higher levels - Skyrim modded with SkyUI and able to use properly working quickslots, etc. absolutely transformed the enjoyability of the game. Personally I don't see anything gained from having a bit of obscurity to the bread and butter mechanics and hiding away the exact impact of certain effects, etc. though that gets some players (i.e. old school super into RPG Morrowind players, etc.) up in arms who think people should be working everything out from trial and error, etc.

I'd forgotten how broken the Bravil mage's recommendation quest is, endless reloading saves and repeating already done dialogue entries to get it to progress not to mention issues with getting people to spawn in when they are supposed to and the game not telling you during what time certain key NPCs are around and the dialogue options sometimes being at the end of the list so not on screen unless you remember to scroll down.

so when oblivion gates start appearing do you have to close them or will they just swamp the map over time? Not sure if i should have stopped the main quest early to stop them appearing so i could just get on with exploring.
