Android O

Looks like it's set to launch next Monday 21/08

Yes, I see from the linked article below that Evan Blass is suggesting next Monday and that he has a good track record.

This linked article shows 11 of the best new features. I too wonder if the final item, Treble, will help Google solve the slow update issue that has limited quickly updated Android OSs to only the latest releases. Which new features are popular with others here?

Check out the Android O eclipse-themed teaser website counting down to Monday 21 August! They plan to launch Android O on the day a total solar eclipse can be observed from the Western United States. Sadly the eclipse in the UK is expected to be on 4%. They say that Android O will bring some super (sweet) new powers. "Oreo" anyone? Guess we will learn what the "O" means on Monday for the new Operating System.

Why do I say Oreo, rather than Oatmeal, Orangina, Octopus, etc? An eclipsed sun looks like a black disc, surrounded by a ring of white, just like an Oreo. Is that what this all is leading to? Remember the Kitkat deal with Google and Nestle? Perhaps this will be one between Google and Nabisco?

The live stream starts Monday at noon Eastern time in the US (5 pm here) followed by the Android O reveal at 2:40 pm Eastern time.

The single standout feature for me will be the stability improvements for Bluetooth. This is a must if the pixel 2 is losing the headphone jack.

Just yesterday I started using the Pixel XL Bluetooth to enable my Google Music, YouTube, iPlayer, etc to play audio over the superior speakers of Google Home. The Bluetooth pairing is outstanding. If Pixel 2 improves on it, I am not sure I will even notice it!

A lot of people have this opinion but I never really noticed any issues. Use it every day to connect to the car as well.

It's a strange one, as I have never been happy with bluetooth on android for a few years now. The google engineers admitted on the google forums they knew of issues and where working on finally addressing them all.

Personally, I have these when using 8 beta

Pixel > Bose QC35 Headphones = Google Play Music & Spotify suffer from music stutter
Pixel > BMW iDrive5 = Google Play Music & Spotify do not play through car speakers. Telephone calls work only when someone calls me, not when I call them

and the most complained about on the forums using android N was bluetooth disconnects which I suffer from in the car (probably 50% of the time) and my portable JAM speaker around 25% of the time

It did it on my oneplus 3 and galaxy s6 so not just with the Pixel

Ah okay, very interesting. The only issue I've had would be stutter once a day or so on my B&O H7s, that's quite annoying. I stream 45 mins Spotify to work every morning then maybe 45 mins on the way home, never get issue other than range, although that's probably due to my case on my phone (Rhinoshield). On an S8+ now which also doesn't have issues. Did some reading up and bluetooth sure seems a niggle, especially on Reddit.

I am really looking forward to the Android O release today at 7:30 pm London time preceded by NASA coverage of the total solar eclipse. What makes this solar eclipse coverage perspective unique I believe is the fact that NASA is using its deep space orbiter vehicle to film the eclipse from above the moon so that the rolling effect of the eclipse starting with Salem, Oregon on the West Coast will be seen moving southeasterly across the US to Charleston, South Carolina on the East Coast. This perspective, rather than the previous one showing the eclipse from Earth. As previously posted, check the Android Eclipse website page link below later today or now if you want some fascinating background leading up to the event.

And of course the shape of the "shadow" on earth lends itself to my guess that we are about to see the Android "O" reveal as an "Oreo", with the dark circle (the eclipse is actually more an oblong shape than a circle, but close enough) and the white shimmering sunlight on the edges of the circle (the corona) reminding me of an Oreo. 7:30 pm tonight it starts.

the big question is when will this be available on my S7E

I would bet a months pay Samsung haven't even started developing it yet, despite the beta been out since what March? They seen to wait after the final version which baffles me. Beta 3 had the finished apis so everyone can get ahead of the game.

There was an article actually about this, and the feeling was they do this to make customers buy the latest phones and leave the big version updates for months/years. I think it was Motorola who took over 12 months before they launched M (although it could have been another manufacturer).

I'd hope the S7 is included in this, but It's almost expected that the O beta will start in October for the S8 like Marshmallow did last year for the S7, then public release at some point in the start of the new year.
