Arch I just struggle so much with money on this, what's the best way to make cash. My tax income jus gets offset by all the production buildings needed to keep the population growing.

have you set up trading routes?

I am new admittedly but i find that selling Milk and tools (for a kick-off)is a good way to keep the money flowing in.

regarding regular income from Taxation you really do constantly need to be building peasant houses after major construtions to blance it out and straight away provide the Chruch, tavern and tailors too so that they can advance ASAP with no delay.

have been tempted to try this game for ages but just can't bring myself to buy it. Civ 5 let me down so i'm lacking on the strategy front :(

I'm enjoying it but it's not the Holy Grail of RTS or anything.

for me it's USP, if you want to call it that, is that it has a nice tranquil, even relaxing, pace. it is also extremely cheap too.

What is the Holy Grail would you say? I'm looking for something terribly in-depth with obscene micro-macro management?

Usually only board games allow this for me but I'm wanting a video game now.

This is looking to be quite a good call so far.

Personally I'd call the ultimate RTS as Supreme Commander Forged Alliance. That goes into rts in almost every way you wish others did. But as for micro management it doesnt do enough. Theres more micro management in anno then in other rts I've played, but I try not to call it rts cause I personally ignore the combat side.
Have you tried empire total war? Theres so much micro management in that game that each turn takes me ages!

i got this and nearly finished installing, how do you guys play it? is it a campaign mode or do you play like a sandbox with no limits sort of thing?

Ah ok fair enough, can it be played at a slow pace without having to expand constantly to other islands, just looking for something relaxing to play really.

Also specs in sig: Will it run maxed out or is it quite cpu dependent?

Yeah when you go to continuous game you can set it up how you like. So for a starter, try not having any computer player, and dont have the corsairs, fire, illness, etc. Then its just a case of building up a settlement and satisfying their needs, with the odd few quests for distractions.

Just had a little play, seems fun, got some to citizens etc. One thing i find with these sorts of games is my cities always look so awkard and have such a poor layout lol.

Yeah it got messy a bit for me in the start. Seriously though use the layout websites above, they have some very nice compact ones.

Use this one and remove the unneeded buildings.

trying to pick this game up but is no longer on steam.

can get the Gold edition for £29.99, is it still worth that or should i just get anno 1404 for £6.99?

Venice basically adds a 3rd npc dock with new items like infinite norias and such. Also most importantly it adds multiplayer. If neither of those appeal to you then yuo're not missing much!
Although the venitian trading ships are awsome. 6 cargo holds, 2 item slots and faster then normal ships. Managed to get one of mine up to 115 capacity per hold!

To be honest, the base game is so huge with so many ways to play and so much to do, that despite being a huge fan of the game I have felt no inclination whatsoever to buy the expansion.

For those of you guys who've played epic continuous games, what do you do when you exhaust your natural resources? I've nearly exhausted both Iron deposits on my main, and whilst there are other Islands with them I was just wondering what happens when I exhaust them to.

You can replenish them for a fee.

On your guy's main Occidental Islands, do you build small amounts of houses and upgrade them, then repeat, or do you build all Peasants first, then set about upgrading them?

Personally I do one set of houses then upgrade a few times. Once they reach the base level of noblemen (the meat only phase) I should have enough income. Then I cover my island. If you start from scratch covering your island you're not accorded the luxury of adding a few productions to your main island when in trouble, and shipping plus storage for so many people may not keep up. An island covered with peasants needs around 300 storage to be fair. And at lvl1 you wont have storehouses enough for it. The only other way is lots of ships doing small bits at a time, and they tend to bunch up if on the same routes. Plus you cant build ships at peasant level :p

Was hoping to get this on steam and give it a go as well, is there anywhere else to download it for under £15 before I get it from the Ubisoft store?
