Castrol have specificly avoided testing their consumer oil to the relevant spec required by volvo, to push everybody to buy their oil directly from dealers at £100 for 5 litres.
Thats quite a strong accusation isnt it?

probably
just venting my frustration at volvo forcing you to use an oil labelled exclusively to their requirements.
I am sure this was for sale in Costco, definately was Edge but not for VW (which is what I wanted) it certainly wasn't £100!
Edited for correctness![]()
Okay so heres the datasheet for Castrol Edge 0W30

Sulphated Ash content is 1.0 % so thats within A5/B5 specification.
Only measurement to be worried about then is the HTHS viscosity, which they dont give. Search continues ..
A thread about a person putting a litre of oil in their car has gone to two pages.
Is yours the same engine as in the Focus ST or is yours the 2.4T?

Volvo recommend 0W-30 A5/B5 which is on some Castrol Edge 0W-30 formulations.
The product you are after is 'Castrol Edge 0W-30 A5/B5'. The SLX products are also available in franchise workshops or dealerships.
Also the formulation in Edge 0W-30 A5/B5 has been tested and approved by volvo for extended drain. The HTHS of this oil is 2.9 (ACEA A5/B5 oils are between 2.9 and 3.5)
Castrol Edge 0W-30 is a different formulation and meets A3/B4. (HTHS min 3.5)
simon, is there a marked difference between those two oils (ie a difference to MrLOL in real life rather than in a mass spectrometer) and will it make any difference to his engine?
Can't comment on that sorry.
I can't go into too much detail obviously, but reading the question again I guess the A5/B5 is a thinner 0W-30 with a lower KV100 and HTHS of around 3[TW]Fox;17474321 said:Why not?
