Any issues with using 10W40 instead of 5W30?

hmmm and then joe public will see £100 / 5L, think WTF, and then head down the local motor factors or halfords for the next best thing

i cant see a volvo owner being a totally captive audiance who will buy castrol or volvo oil only.

I am sure this was for sale in Costco, definately was Edge but not for VW (which is what I wanted) it certainly wasn't £100!

Thats quite a strong accusation isnt it?

probably

They do have different specifications.

ACEA A5/B5 is

http://www.lubrizol.com/EuropeanEngineOils/A5B508.html

ACEA A3/B3 is

http://www.lubrizol.com/EuropeanEngineOils/A3B308.html

Differences between the spec are:

Requirement Method unit Limit
HTHS viscosity CEC L-36-A-90 cP ≥ 2.9 and ≤ 3.5
Sulphated Ash ASTM D874 %wt ≤ 1.6

But

HTHS viscosity CEC L-36-A-90 cP ≥ 3.5
Sulphated Ash ASTM D874 %wt ≤ 1.5

for A3/B3

so A5/B5 has to have a viscosity less than or equal to 3.5 but more than 2.9, A3/B3 has to be less than or equal to 3.5 but has no lower limit. In theory as long as the HTHS viscosity on edge is > 2.9 the only difference is the 0.1 % difference in Sulphated ash content.

Edge isnt the stuff thats £100 for 5 litres, its SLX Professional longtec For Vovlo Engines (to give it its proper name)

Its an oil that has been forumulated by castrol to volvos specific requirements, and is available only in 1L top up bottles, or in 1000 litre drums used by the dealers.

Thats the only oil they recommend :/

Edited for correctness :p

Sadly yes. I'm trying to cut through the marketing BS to work out what will actually do instead of this mythical dealer only oil.

A thread about a person putting a litre of oil in their car has gone to two pages.

You should see the thread about somebody putting a few litres of "Premium" Unleaded in their car ^^

Im sure somebody will be along soon to tell Fox that 0W-30 is just a name and means nothing as its normal oil

I've no idea how important the A5/B5 specification is at all. I'm only presuming it is because volvo tell me so.

Others are patronosing me on here for daring to believe anybody other than volvo because they built the engine, others saying to ignore them because its a marketing exercise and nothing more.

I'm thoroughly confused !

Volvo recommend 0W-30 A5/B5 which is on some Castrol Edge 0W-30 formulations.

The product you are after is 'Castrol Edge 0W-30 A5/B5'. The SLX products are also available in franchise workshops or dealerships.

Also the formulation in Edge 0W-30 A5/B5 has been tested and approved by volvo for extended drain. The HTHS of this oil is 2.9 (ACEA A5/B5 oils are between 2.9 and 3.5)

Castrol Edge 0W-30 is a different formulation and meets A3/B4. (HTHS min 3.5)

any idea where to find a stockist, neither Opie Oils or Halfords stock the A5/B5 formulation, only the A3/B4

simon, is there a marked difference between those two oils (ie a difference to MrLOL in real life rather than in a mass spectrometer) and will it make any difference to his engine?

I don't think were allowed to link to other forums but if you go to goggle and type in "Texaco Havoline 0w30 A5/B5" then the first link will be to a Volvo forum where somebody is selling that as a replacement for the SLX or whatever its called. Any use?

Also if you go to a popular online auction site and try to find "0w30 Fully Synthetic Engine Oil for VOLVO *Free P+P*" then the is an oil for sale quite cheap their that guarantees to be compatible with Castrol Formula SLX 0w30 and meet all the requirements of Volvo

I can't go into too much detail obviously, but reading the question again I guess the A5/B5 is a thinner 0W-30 with a lower KV100 and HTHS of around 3

The 0W-30 with A3/B4 is thicker and has a HTHS around 3.5.

All this data is available on the Spec sheets for the oil.
