Any opinions on o2 broadband?

The friends and family discount I can get you is the best LLU package available on your line for £7.50 a month.

O2 got activated today. Great service and a doddle to set up.
Although in my router it says its synced around 18meg down 1.3meg up which would be ok but on any speedtest i do i only get 10meg and 0.6 meg up.

Is this due to the o2 trying to find a stable speed on my line for the first week or so after connection?

Also will i see an improvement if i switch routers as the o2 wieless box seems very user unfriendly to me??
even on superuser i cant for the life of me find where i can change wireless encryption, heck i dont even know what my own wep password is meant to be that the o2 cd sets up automatically. Not much of a problem as its unlimited download but as we used to have a problem with next door neighbour stealing internet id rather set it up properly using WPA so they cant slow my connection.

Speedtest sites are awful. Test it by downloading a large file (or multiple large files) from sites you know are fast and reliable.

The o2box isn't great to be honest. Get a cheap sky branded netgear DG834GT from an auction site and then flash it with the DGTeam firmware. You'll get slightly better speeds and stability and massively better usability.

The wep password is written on the router - you don't need to use the setup CD at all.

Hey z0mbi3, got a call from o2 today, the lady said their system lost some details so you will need to refill in the forms for yesterdays sign ups, including myself again.

Cheers.

thanks for help z0mbi3 but i have had same problem as anachronox, their system lost some details could you please send again :)
cheers bud have sent email to you :)

cheers nick

That's great isn't it!

I'll give them a call in the morning and see if I can't just give you the details to call them directly. Failing that I'll just re-add you.

Can you guys who've had a call saying something went wrong drop me a mail please. Will help me keep trck of things if I have an e-mail trail.

What's the difference between a normal DG834GT and the sky branded one? I'm looking to buy one tomorrow or something.

On topic, O2 broadband are the same as BE, and since I'm on BE, I'd reccommend them to anyone and everyone.

They are by far the best ISP I've had the luxury of using. Top speed, I get 22.5MB 1.3 upload and I've never had any serious or ongoing issues with the service.

The customer service is top notch too, never had a problem with them, most of them seem genuinely interested in helping you and not just doing their job.

The Sky branded one just has a custom sky firmware on it which you need to flash over. Aside from that, exactly the same :)

Also, same line speeds as myself. Nice one :)

So I'd get the same results with the normal one? Nice!

22.5MB is great, but I can get more with a better router, used to have a linksys one and I got about 23.5MB :p. One of the reasons for me buying a new router, another one is that this speedtouch one gets crazily hot, so hot that it's actually got a gash on it because it's got so hot and the plastic has become plyable. :o

Just messing around with my new o2 internet and looking at these stats, im not overly network savvy but i seem to have a lot of errors listed, is this amount normal? if not what can i do?

Uptime: 0 days, 9:44:30
DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,321 / 18,483
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 18.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.5 / 15.5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.0 / 5.5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 104 / 79,112
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 104 / 149
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 74 / 118

Also with such low attenuation should i not get the full whack 20mb/1.6mb??

The BeBox does an awful job of reporting errors. You need the number of frames transferred to tell whether they're relevant, though if 0 kB transferred is right I'd be inclined just to ignore the counters.

Your attenuation isn't that low - 15.5dB downstream = ~1.5km of copper. 3dB target SNR margin would get you closer to full rate though.

If you use a modem that'll let you tweak your SNR margin, then you can do it yourself.

With the O2/Be Box, DMT tool should work.

Hi Mate

Emailed you last night just to say we got the call off O2 like the others

Ok sent you a mail just now, if you can try that and let me know if it works as soon as possible then I'll send the other guys who got the same call the same details.

I remember they asked my housemate for the name of the person that recommended us...he kind of stumbled for words for a few minutes until the person said "ah...let's move on, shall we".
