Any opinions on o2 broadband?

Ok i just found out the reason why sam predicts slow speeds for me is because im still using old copper wires, i wont see decent speeds till BT replace them with fibre;

"BT Wholesale has set an enablement date of 18/08/2008 for their 21CN Wholesale Broadband Connect product at the Pimlico exchange"

So should i wait till then before joining o2, or should i just join now with 8mb speed and will they let me get the better speeds avail when the fibre goes in? Worried it might get capped at the low speed if i join too early.

Ah my mistake, 21cn fibre is a different thing, so im stuck with 8mb speed prediction on adsl2+. oh well.

I wouldn't place too much faith in the speed estimates. I'm around 700 metres from my exchange in a straight line yet when I got my BT line enabled, a check on my number said I'd see 3mbit under ADSL MAX. I'm actually syncing at a little under 20mbit right now. Obviously whoever had my phone number before me lived quite a way away and the info was never updated.

It reckons I'd get 7Mbps on a line that's currently connected at 14460kbps. It's using distance, which is pretty worthless.

Hi z0mbi3, I have been with Virgin Media for six year's now and finaly decided to change ISP, I would like to join O2. Are you still doing that O2 discount? if so could you please offer me the same discount I would realy appreciate it.

Yep discount is certainly still available.

Can I ask that everyone who's waiting to hear something back from O2 post here. I'm working my way though my e-mails but I'd hate to think I missed someone out!

Hey z0mbi3, Did you get my email earlier about BT messing up the allocation of our telephone number. Not heard anything from your guys yet. Fingers crossed :)

Emailed you a few days ago, never got a response, have my mac key ready.

You e-mailed me lunch time yesterday you fibber :p

Don't worry though, I put your details through this morning. If you haven't received anything from O2 by the end of the day drop me a mail and I'll send you the details you need manually :)

edit:

Actually same goes for everyone who's still waiting on a mail from O2. Let me know by the end of today and I'll send the details to you myself.

Loki, I've seen your mails but I didn't pick up on BT screwing up your number allocation. No worries though, same as above just drop me a mail by the ned of today if you haven't heard anything.

Hi z0mbi3,

I would just like to say thanks for your help and passing on the offer. O2 have been brilliant from the word go. Ordernig was quick and simple. My go-live date was exactly 7 days from order. The modem was quickly dispatched and was also allowed to be delivered to a different address than my phone line - Kudos.

When I go over to sheffield to set everything up, assuming everything is working, you'll be getting a letter of thanks from myself to the O2 Broadband people. Do you have an address that I can post the letter too?

I'm currently connected to BT's 21CN equipment as part of the 'Next Generation Speed Trial' and it's as bad as the old kit in terms of service. I do sync at about 6Mb now where it was only about 3.5Mb before and HTTP downloads do go a lot faster, however they are still doing major traffic shaping on the line which means that any attempt at doing non-HTTP stuff is seriously capped. For example online gaming, Skype, Bittorrent, FTP, Media Streaming etc. The cap only drops off after about 1AM making it pretty much useless for most of the day if I need to use any non-HTTP services.

Btw im using my cousins mobile number, he said its ok.

If he wanted to join o2 too could he register with the same mobile number? If not its ok, hes got another number he can reg with, but was just curious.

Do you work for BT? If not is there not a better service from another provider you can get out of your exchange?

I don't work for BT, they offered me the trial a few months ago because I live in Birmingham and this is where they were trialing the 21CN stuff. I'm thinking of going to O2 because I have an iPhone contract and they seem like they offer a pretty good service (I was with Be* Unlimited when I was living at Uni and they were excellent). I am just waiting on my MAC from BT which has been in progress for 5 days so far and still no code yet. Hopefully I'll get it soon and then be able to move to a new provider, my exchange seems to be enabled with nearly everything which is good. Can you get a better discount than the £5/month off for being a O2 customer?
