Any opinions on o2 broadband?

The o2 router isnt that bad but his gets hot & overheats

People keep saying this but I've never had heat cause any problems on the two I had (moved from Be* to O2 last year).

It's a bit irrelevant anyway as they have a new box now.

The new box the speedtouch 585v7 has heat issues like the older router but its only iffy then U lay them down, ventilation is the key :D Be use the same router, I'm not too bothered now aslong as its cheap ;)

I think the heat issues must be on earlier revisions because as I say I've never had the issue and mines always horizontal too

Well Mr Zombie I think your a lucky customer (I agree with U that older models were dire & like the BT hub), but to stress to all there isnt much difference to the normal run of the mill web surfer with the o2 box, plus its not yours so if it breaks U ring o2 for a new one. Some people will always use their own kit but really U dont need to if U dont want to, some games like steam based stuff has issues with thompson routers but that can be fixed.

All in all Zombie I have to agree with you all the way :D (nightshift the killer of social life)

I (gently) put some 1 inch screws into the rubber feet and now my ST585v7 sits on stilts. The router is currently bridged into a WRT54GL and I have no issues ie heat/crashing/reboots needed etc

Actually I'd forgotten about the steam based stuff. Forgotten how I fixed it to. Should really dig up the link.

That's a pretty good idea, although make sure you're able to reverse it easily incase you have to send the box back.

The only thing that concerns me about o2 is that they dont do fast path, should i worry about my ping as a gamer joining o2?

I use my con for playing ut3 mostly.

even with the connection on interleaved your ping on most uk & eu servers will be low!! 20-30 for uk servers & most eu apart from spain will be 30 to 50 unlike bt connected interleaved where it will be nearer 80.... so dont worry!!

Indeed. It can be a bit faffy to get fastpath turned on as some of the CS agents aren't aware of it yet. I imagine this is a situation that'll improve though.

It can make a difference in some games and if you have a decent quality line, you'll gain some sync speed without losing out on stability.

z0mbie3, are you still offering the O2 discount thing? If so could you do anything for me please? I am leaving idnet and have a MAC code already. There is no LLU up here but i can get O2's normal broadband. Their website states £22.50 a month (no O2 mobile and only O2 Home Broadband Access) for up to 8mb (currently at 6.2mb). It's more than i really want to pay but any discount will be most welcome. Do you have a proper email address as i do not use IM of any kind? Many thanks.

I just checked the samknows website:
http://www.samknows.com/broadband/mapping/mapping.php

Entered my postcode sw1p4eu to see how far i am from the exchange, says im 600m from pimlico and that "ADSL2+ available at ~8.5Mbps"

Then i clicked a house down my road which was 500m away and it said 16Mbps.

Anybody know how realistic the values from samknows are? Would i only get 8mb from a 20mb connection :s

Dont know if o2 can tell me what speeds people in my area are getting.
