Any opinions on o2 broadband?

Quick question do o2 offer any form or Newsgroup access? I'm looking to move away from my 2mb Zen connection which costs £35 a month (100Gb limit) but does have it's own news servers so something I need to factor in.

Dont think they do. But im sure there are plenty of free ones that offer the same features that you would normally get with an ISP.

Just spoken with o2, and for £30 a month I can get their Access package (I'm non LLU and no date for my exchange) so upto 8mb with unlimited access (although guy seemed to think that going over 100Gb a month would trigger fair usage emails), and mobile access with 3Gb a month.

This seem like a fair price?

If your an O2 mobile customer, you can get Access alone for £17.50 a month. So i dont really think 3Gb mobile access is worth £12.50 extra.

That was including my mobile customer discount.

I do want mobile access though for when I'm on the move/at work, is there a better option than the above for less than 12.50 a month? I've had a quick look around and everywhere seems to want £15 for mobile access with a 3Gb limit.

Web bolt-on for £7.50 a month i think should be available to you. And its unlimited (within reason).

Pay Monthly: http://www.o2.co.uk/mobilestariffs/tariffs/paymonthly/boltons

PAYG: http://www.o2.co.uk/mobilestariffs/tariffs/paygo/paygoboltons0153

EDIT: Reading about the web bolt-on, the limit is pretty low. They say it should normally be below 200mb a month, but i have no idea whether or not they enforce it.

I spoke with customer support earlier this morning about the bolt-ons, both the £7.50 and £20 options are listed as unlimited but are actually limited to 200Mb/3Gb retrospectively under fair usage. Which is a same as my mobile has HSDPA built in so would be my preferred method of mobile access.

Guess its really down to how much you use mobile internet. Im on 3 and sometimes use their monthly internet package and haven't gone over 160mb. This is on a HSDPA Nokia 6120c.

There still doing it, make sure you have a working bt line and check on the o2 site to see if it says your number will work before you email though because without either of them there is not a lot they can do.

Also dont let the people at o2 staff accounts tell you to go to an o2 store to get a router because thats wrong, you will also need some patience, i ended up on the phone for absolutely ages before i spoke to someone who could set mine up.

Im still confused about the whole "best you can get on your line" thing tho, when i text the number to see what packages i could have it said them all, when i talked to the women who set it up she said i could only have the standard.

Fair enough but the way the email explains it you would think that someone would just give you the best you could get, in other words even if you could only get 8mb down you would still get the upload that you would get with there best package.

As it turns out im going to save the connection fee, but i dont think ive done much better than if i had just used the discount you get for been an o2 customer

is it possible to use a different router, as i heard some rumors about skys prebuilt in user name and password on the router ? as it dosent seem to offer any better protection than wep ...

If you're talking about using it on Sky, it's possible to retrieve your username and password. If you're talking about using a Sky router for Be, it's possible to flash the DG834GT Sky routers with a normal firmware and get it working as a 'proper' GT.

Either way, you've got access to WPA.

Having a knightmare with o2 at the mo, they will happily give me home broadband + mobile (via USB stick) for £30 a month, but if I want home broadband and the 3Gb mobile data usage over my current mobile they want to charge me £42.50.

Surely it would be cheaper for them to give me this data allowance on my current mobile, no extra sim or USB modem costs. :D

Looks like O2 have just installed their equipment in our exchange and I'm tempted to go for the 16Mb package. However I have a few questions before jumping ship from ADSL24 (which I've been very happy with, just want to save money)

1. Do you have to use the supplied router or can I carry on using my Netgear DG834G router?
2. Is it actually unlimted downloads? I've checked the FAQ but it doesn't mention a fair useage policy or port throtling? I download a lot of torrents
3. I'm currently syching at 7.4Mb down, what should I expect from the 16mb package, 14mb?
