Or do you simply have nothing else to do? I'm guessing you can only pray a certain amount of times a day before it gets boring.

No, there is no comparison. There is nothing before God that would make us dream of a creator. Yet for santa claus, the tooth fairy, and the easter bunny, there are similar comparisons. Santa claus came about because of kind Christian who gave away presents, the tooth fairy because of angels ect ect.
God is something which all cultures have subscribed to.
Because it doesn't exactly portray Atheists in a very good light if you insult religious people just because they are religious

Well I think its all stupid, as is everyone that has replied to this thread.
Jesus, walked on water, did the coming back to life thing, who said he was the Son of God?
Has anyone seen Dynamo, he's got a pretty extensive bag of party tricks, second coming, nope, hes a magician, whats the difference?
Evolution, works for me, if you want to belive something else then thats entirely up to you, as long as you dont stick it in my face or down my throat then we'll get on fine.
Religion, more a guide on how to be a better person than a hard and fast rule book, religion is twisted by us to get what we want, our own agenda. Believe what you want, push it in my face or down my throat and we wont get on, use it as an excuse to hurt me or mine, It'll be me or you in a box.
At the end of the day all religious text is, as i see it is Chinese whispers, every copy of any Religious book is wrong, there will always be regional variations in language, incorrect translations and so on, this cant be denied now, let alone thousands of years ago, all it takes is one person to think, hmmm, hang on if I just change a few words here
or there I can get something from this and off we go, what starts off as a good idea is twisted into something that strays so far from its original meaning its not even related...
Look at how many Christian groups there are, why, surely if they all believe in the same God then they should all be exactly the same, but no, we get involved and greed and all those other wonderful human traits come into it and it all goes to ****..
Personally I belive in nothing but myself, is there life out there, yes, most likely, better and more eveolved than us, possible, "God", nah, sorry I dont buy that bit, Earth might have been given life by another "being" out there billions of years ago but does that make him God, no, where did he/she come from and who created them, why two arms and two legs and so on...

Yes because we can look on the origins of these characters and see that they were made up by using things that already exist. For example, santa claus originated from a man who gave away presents. People then just dressed him up in a suit and gave him a sleigh and some reindeer's. It's hardly a new thing is it now.
And by the way, santa claus is a mainly western thing. Yet God is something that all cultures through human existence have believed in. Are you saying the majority of the human race is deluded?
I tell you what santa claus and the tooth fairy remind me of. They remind me of an atheist trying to depict evolution of humans by just giving them an extra arm or leg.
Surely with that viewpoint you have to then believe the consciousness you experience is nothing more than an illusion? How do you prove you are "real"? You could just be hallucinating.
And if you find it easier to believe the universe came from nothing just like that and magically wound up on all the right dials then kudos to you.

So if that's the case, then why do different cultures have different gods, some have multiple gods, all the gods look different and have different teachings - to the point where these different cultures insist on killing each other over whose is the "real" one?
Surely if god was universal then everyone's beliefs would be the same?
It's a bit convenient that Asian gods have Asian features, Oriental gods Oriental features, and Western gods Western features - if god created man in his image, then which image is the correct one?

Jason, I strongly believe that if it wasn't for religious teaching of children at an early age, religion would die out pretty quickly.
It's true that all cultures subscribe to a god of some kind, but If you were born in India or Iran, you certainly wouldn't be a Christian, would you? Because you wouldn't have been raised that way.

Can one of you Christians explain why:-
there are no eye witness accounts of the life of Jesus in the bible ? why the first mention of him was written decades later based on word of mouth from others who themselves had heard it told elsewhere, why this presumed incredible person who could walk on water & do other David Blaine type stuff that thousands thronged to see but not one iota was written about him at the time ?
Why you have not noticed that the very Christian symbol of the cross is totally incorrect because the Romans didn't use such a cross but used one shaped like a T, the victim nailed to the crossbar through his wrists whilst on the ground & then hoisted up onto the vertical post.
Note most of the crucifixes show nails through the hands & not wrists, why did the Romans do this? because through the hands would not bear the weight of a body hanging. Christian beliefs and just everything else to do with religion are full of historical inaccuracies, even the bible is misread, take the nativity you see enacted every year, find where in the bible it mentions three wise men or magi & you won't be able to because it's not there.

I'm really not wanting to offend religious people, we're all different. I just wish they could come up with a logical response to Dawkins very simple question...
There are and have been thousands of different religions, why is the one you were brought up with the right one? If you were born in the caveman days it would be the animal god, ancient Greece would be Zeus. It's not just historical religions, current religions are vastly different just based on where you were born.

There are many Arab christians. Many are persecuted for their faith. And these are people who were raised in strict muslim households.
