Anyone else wanting to upgrade but just can't stomach paying so much for it?

No they were not....
The 580 was just a revised 480 Fermi card not even a new design or on a new node....
The 480gtx was not a 'titan' class product. Titans have been released with typically twice the memory of any contemporary card in far more limited numbers than the 480 or 580gtx which had rather average memory sizes for their day....

No the 8800gtx ultra would not be a titan equivalent total nonsensce!

Titan cards have typically been released with over twice the memory of any other contemporary card on a whole new (for the consumer side) die. The 8800gtx ultra was an overclocked 8800gtx nothing more special about it than that as such guess what its comparable with a contemporary 1080 gtx ( an overclocked one!) You also fail to account for inflation and the changing $/£ rate in you 8800gt comparison... which should actually be a 8800gts as the 8800gtx ultra was not a 'titan' tier product.

The 8800gts was $300 on release in 2007

https://www.cnet.com/uk/products/geforce-8800-gts/review/

In 2016 dollars that's $350

http://www.usinflationcalculator.com/

NVidia's msrp for the 1070 (non Fe) was $379... A look on the American version of the 'river' site shows that you can indeed pick ups decent (gigabyte) 1070 for under $380

DING, DING, DING we have winner folks. Nvidia marketing works.

The 480 GTX was the titan of it's generation, The 580GTX was the titan of it's generation. You think the Titan cards are something special?

They ain't they are just the cards made from the top chip of the time. The 480 GTX was the top card made from the GF100 chip. The 580GTX was the top card made from the GF110 chip. The Titan card was the top card made from the GK110 chip. The 780ti and Titan black were made from a new revision of the GK110 chip.

Internally nothing has changed for Nvidia. Top cards come from the top chip and continues down along. Externally however they have made a name change and pushed the prices up one tier. x80/x70 cards are now called Titan/ti. x60 cards are now called x80/x70 etc.

And you are so wrong about the 8800GTX lineup. The 8800 ultra was the Titan of it's era. What do you think the Titan tier is? It's just the highest card in Nvidia's product stack each generation. It's just a name change. There is no new magical higher tier. There you are again falling for Nvidia's marketing.

You are also wrong about the 8800 GTS, it was the third card down in Nvidia's product stack at the time. The 8800GTS released in 2007 and the 8800GT were made from the same chip. That makes the 8800GTS the 1080 and the 8800GT the 1070 equivalent. And I didn't forget inflation, I used the same website and calculations you did. The 8800GT was $240 on release. That makes it £222 in todays money.

Just because something was the best product of its time from a given company doesn't make it comparable to the best product from a company further down the line.....

Did you just completely ignore my posts about big die GPU's becoming increasingly harder to make as the process size gets smaller and transistor density shoots up? This means Nvidia has far fewer (as a percentage of die's produced) die's that are suitable for the 'top' tier products as the generations go forward.

This inevitably means that the bigger die GPU's have to start occupying 'new' positions in the product line up (above the existing ones) ala 'Titan'!

A clear example of the 'big die' problem can be actually seen with Titan's themselves. The first Titan was not a fully enabled die. This wasn't because NVidia deliberately wanted to gimp it but due to yield issues at the time meaning they would not have been able to produce a financially viable full die in sufficient quantities at the time. Down the road as the process improved they could release the fully enabled Titan Black with the same die just now fully enabled. The same goes for the Pacal Titan - a cut down die for the same reasons. Heck even the small die's used in the 1070 and 1080 were in short supply for quite a while due to demand and yield issues... what makes you think Nvidia could have released a large die product at a 'reasonable' price straight out of the 16nm gates???

http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/feature/...rce-gtx-1080-vs-gtx-1070-vs-gtx-1060-3640925/

SO YES I DO THINK THE TITAN CARDS ARE SPECIAL THEY ARE PART OF A MUCH MORE LIMITED (IN TERMS OF OVERALL PERCETNTAGE OF CARD PER GENERATION PRODUCED) RUN OF GPU'S THEN CARD LIKE THE 8800GTX, 480GTX OR 580GTX

And you are so wrong about the 8800GTX lineup. The 8800 ultra was the Titan of it's era

The 8800GTX ultra was just a higher clocked card from the same generation (8800GTX) nothing more special than that.. so what's the lower clocked version of the Pascal Titan to be the comparable SKU now to the 8800GTX? Oh wait no that doesn't exist does it!

The 8800GTX Ultra was not a 'Titan' of its day it was an overclocked 1080GTX of its day because as above Nvidia would not have enough fully enabled GP102 chips to make it financially viable to release a new product with that chip fully enabled (or cut down like the Pascal Titan X) straight out of the 16nm/ Pascal starting gates as its mass market top tier product like the 8800GTX was in its day...

The 8800 GTX Ultra was just an overclocked variant no more no less it was exactly the same die/ memory configuration as the 8800GTX

Well it seems to be working for them, in the fact that they're actually making money instead of losing it hand over fist...

DING DING DING!!! We have a guy who has no idea folks. NVidia release cards and price them according to what they feel is the price that will make tidy profit.

To be fair the people set the price. If there is enough people who will part with their money even if this gen is £100 - £150 more than last then nVidia will keep the prices where they are. I mean look how well 970 and 980 sold for that's exactly why the prices are where they are. Nut problem is they sold like hot cakes and people thought that prices was okay. nVidia see that as well there is money to be made here lets increase the prices they will still sell and we increase our profit margins. People still buy them DING DING DING they still sell.

Not untill people start realising when the price is getting beyond stupid and lay off buying will the prices drop. I'm one of these people who wont be getting a 1080Ti if its at £899. or even at £800. For me im looking at £650 tops for my next card for a sensible performance boost over my 1542Mhz 980Ti
I wont part with my cash otherwise. Yea i can afford to drop £1k on a Titan XP but i rather be sensible with my cash.

No difference to the mentality to why people still pre order games then moan and then pre order again..

True but i don't pre order games lol. I always wait on reviews and see what people think. Only one where i waited on reviews then ignored them was No Man's Sky. I did enjoy it for about 4 hours then got very bored quick.

Think i missed something here but yea i own both consoles PS4 and Xbox One but primarily game on my PC. I only own consoles for the exclusives but it does kill me playing because i can feel that sub 60FPS now im so used to gaming on my PC especially with Gsync.

As above, Every other day I have a look at the 1070's and 1080's humming and hawing about it but in the end the asking price is just way to much for something i'll want to get rid of in about a years time.

Was moaning about it at the start but a 34' widescreen forced my hand in laying out my shekels for a 1080. Since I tend to keep my cards for at least 2-3 years, I guess the long term value and enjoyment I get out of it ain't too bad when calculated on a daily pro rata figure. But yea, the initial cash outlay drove me nuts. Which is why I done it when I was drunk!

Everything but my GPU and SSD are second hand. Rarely buy new these days. Usually hit the MM for stuff I need as it's usually well looked after by whomever is selling it. Let them pay the "buy new tech premium" and I'll take a perfectly fine second hand part for cheap. I managed to get parts for a young lad, all second hand but the case so it at least will look brand new to him. Saved a whack of cash for his family. They would ever have been able to buy him a new pc otherwise.

This is what I do too. My 1080 and 34' widescreen are the only hardware I bought new in years. And that's thanks to some tax back so I didn't see it as 'my' money I guess. Still hurt though.

Managed to sell my FX8320, motherboard, 16GB RAM and CPU fan and buy a 2nd hand 6700, mobo and 16GB of DDR4 and only had to 'pay in' around 70-80 bucks iirc. Not a bad CPU/MOBO/RAM upgrade for the money. A month later I bought a very cheap PSU on Amazon's US site and resold it here in NZ for about 80 bucks profit. So in the end, I guess my upgrade was free :p

If the 1070's came in at the higher end of 200 - low 300s I would buy instantly, but nearly £400 for what should be a mid range card is a lot of money to pay.

Sure it's 980ti performance for a lot less than what they were new, but its a shift in generation so it should be. I bet the 1080ti won't be released at a similar price to what the 980ti was..

I decided to get another 970 as I got a killer deal on one, and when SLI is properly supported it gives performance similar to a 1070 so I'm happy to stick with it for now.

It isn't a mid range card though is it, nothing high end from AMD rivals it.

I've been keeping an eye on prices for components I want for over 18 months now. In that time the PC market has not seen a single penny from me and I've just made do with what I've got and spent my money on other things.

For me it just comes down to fairness. I am more than willing to pay what I perceive as a fair price for a part but it seems none of the retailers agree with me. All I see is greed and crazy prices but hey if people want to pay it and are paying it, not one of us would do any different. That's the market at the moment and that's why I've taken myself out of it.

Nvida can do what ever they want coz there is no competition from AMD. AMD is dead in the water they wont be coming back as the kings of GPU ever. Nvidia know it and that's why prices are where they are.

This has nothing to do with fairness. everything has a cost, components, salaries, R&D, future survival of a company.

I cannot blame them because of the prices.

All we can do is decide what's best for us and how much we are willing to go to get what we want. That's it and that's how the market works.

That's a very limited point of view and it's something you and I cannot foresee.

For one AMD is not dead ( yet ) and can still recover. I still remember when AMD were the top company, they lost it for a while which shows that it can still be done. Second they don't need to be top, all they need is to compete.
