Anyone else wanting to upgrade but just can't stomach paying so much for it?

Being a replacement for the 970 is irellevant to its pricing.

no it isnt cards sit in pricing brackets just like cpus do.amd , nvidia , intel all price their products accordingly.

thats why for eg 480 came in around 200 because the 970/980 were that sort of price.

980 ti still about when the 1070 dropped in they were dropped down to 320-300 to clear while the 1070 was 350-400

with the extra additions like poor stocks on release dollar strong against pound and gouging across the boards.they at near to 450.400 bottom line.

in nvidias actual press release they even say the 1070 is the 970 replacement. you dont say something is the new replacement boom bang it up by 100-150.to say its not relevant cause it is.its broke the trend of pricing because of the listed things i put not because of the gpu speeds.

your simply paying extra for a card in the same range or placement in the market as a previous 970 but paying that extra because of gouging/low stock/dollar pricing.

379 dollars in states.dont even argue about its not over priced.

They weren't that much, i bought 2 of them the second they came into stock and i got them both for under a grand, even the EK full cover blocks only cost about £50 each, don't forget you got over 1.5euro/$2 to the pound in them days. I was earning a lot more money back then for doing the same job also which makes it way harder buying new tech nowadays.

There was a reason I added the inflation in dollars then changed to £'s for 2016 rates because the £ was a lot stronger against the dollar in 2007 then it is now! You know this as you said so in your post. The general theme here is NVidia bashing because their products are perceived as being a lot more expensive then previous cards.. this is not really the case a lot of the price differences are down to currency fluctuations'.

A weak £ is not NVidia's fault or concern so blaming them because your gpu costs more now as a result of a weak £ is stupid.

NVidia sell their products in dollars so you need to compare generation to generation prices in dollars adjusted for us inflation rates....

If NVidia were selling a 8800gtx ultra priced (in dollars) product now it would cost around what I said in £'s now

So which bits spin?

Do NVidia sell their products in dollars yes /no?

Are NVidia responsible for the £/$ rate?

Has the £/$ rate fluctuated a lot over the past 15 or so years?

Has the £ been very weak to the $ in recent months compared to the last 15 years or so on average?

Is posting a picture, meme etc a poor replacement as a rebuttal to a laid out and referenced post?

All this pricing rhetoric is pointless...if you fail at life and can't afford a 1070 then read some self improvement books :p

Get another paper round ?
Work more hours at Maccies ?

Easy riders comment wasn't personal it was not aimed at any one. On the other hand lots of people come on here to boldly declare that the 1070/ 1080/ Titan etc should be £££'s cheaper apparently based on no understanding of economics or r+d costs for starters.

No they were not....
The 580 was just a revised 480 Fermi card not even a new design or on a new node....
The 480gtx was not a 'titan' class product. Titans have been released with typically twice the memory of any contemporary card in far more limited numbers than the 480 or 580gtx which had rather average memory sizes for their day....

No the 8800gtx ultra would not be a titan equivalent total nonsensce!

Titan cards have typically been released with over twice the memory of any other contemporary card on a whole new (for the consumer side) die. The 8800gtx ultra was an overclocked 8800gtx nothing more special about it than that as such guess what its comparable with a contemporary 1080 gtx ( an overclocked one!) You also fail to account for inflation and the changing $/£ rate in you 8800gt comparison... which should actually be a 8800gts as the 8800gtx ultra was not a 'titan' tier product.

The 8800gts was $300 on release in 2007

https://www.cnet.com/uk/products/geforce-8800-gts/review/

In 2016 dollars that's $350

http://www.usinflationcalculator.com/

NVidia's msrp for the 1070 (non Fe) was $379... A look on the American version of the 'river' site shows that you can indeed pick ups decent (gigabyte) 1070 for under $380

Apologies, should have said the 1.5Gb 480 was the Ti and the 3Gb one was Titan, 3Gb 580 was Titan Black.;)

:D

I think I paid around £350-75 from ocuk for a BFG 8800GTX with a factory fitted Danger Den block, in fact I still own it, box and all. It would clock higher than a 8800GTX ULTRA, great card for its time.

Yeah the GTX was much better value, i wish i had bought them instead of the ultras, i wouldnt have had to wait so long for them to come into stock and they would have been a lot cheaper,

What are you on about? There never was a 3Gb 480gtx... The titan came out before the ti for the same generation not after like the 3gb 580gtx to the 1.5gb version

21:9, try before you cry
I did and didn't like it which is a shame as it was easier to run than I expected and I was surprised to be bothered by the res as I was coming from a 27" 1080p panel, I think 2560x1080 is good for a 29" but not for 34" or 35". I'm now at 3440x1440 which fits 34" just right. It makes my Fury pro struggle with some games though, Thankfully Vega will fix that and if AMD continue to be fairly slow at replacing flagships it should do me well for a few years..

you could get a 1070 and sell yours. you get your £100 back or whatever 970s go for these days and enjoy the new card.

If the 1070's came in at the higher end of 200 - low 300s I would buy instantly, but nearly £400 for what should be a mid range card is a lot of money to pay.

Sure it's 980ti performance for a lot less than what they were new, but its a shift in generation so it should be. I bet the 1080ti won't be released at a similar price to what the 980ti was..

I decided to get another 970 as I got a killer deal on one, and when SLI is properly supported it gives performance similar to a 1070 so I'm happy to stick with it for now.

You could have sold your 970 saved the expenditure on another 970 and put this towards the 1070 when it was 349 before brexit...

NVidia release pricing.

460 $229
560 $199
660 $230
760 $249
960 $199
1060 3GB $199
1060 6GB $249

470 $349
570 $349
670 $400
770 $399
970 $329
1070 $379

480 $499
580 $499
680 $500
780 $649
980 $549
1080 $599

So as you can see there hasn't really been any massive jacking up of prices this round at all.

Just to add the top tier non titan cards.

780ti $699
980ti $649
1080ti $???

No doubt the 10 series are grossly overpriced
That's what happens when there is zero competition in the market.

At the end of the day, only you can decide whether it's worth it to buy one. Suck it up or hold on to your cash. No point in whining about it.

Unfortunately it's a unique situation with the UK. If the £/$ exchange rate was the same as it was when the 970 was released, there would be 1070's going for around £299. Which isn't a significant amount more than what the 970 was on launch.

And this whole discussion would be a moot point.

I don't think it's a case of people "can't" afford them, it's more a case of they don't think it's worth it. Which is exactly my position. If I don't personally think an item is worth it, no matter how much I'd like it, I won't buy it.
