Anyone else wanting to upgrade but just can't stomach paying so much for it?

With Nvidia you get mad because of the prices, with amd you get mad because there is no upgrade path. I got a 980ti so for me to go amd I need something faster than that. When vega is out it will be faster (I hope) but then NVidia will have their next gpus out.

I wouldn't expect them to have generation XI out so quickly, maybe early 2018.

The GTX1060 reference PCB looks like it can take a bigger chip IIRC.

So going from the last generation new node launch,we will probably have a GTX2060 at some point or a GTX1060TI using the GP104 cut down since the reference GTX1060 PCB had some interesting features on it. Even the Pascal Titan X is a salvaged chip,so there is room above it if AMD produces a competitive chip.

It was the same with all the moaning about Unilever increasing price by a few pence - they need more money to pay UK workers and invest in the country to create more jobs.

They raised prices to cover the rising cost of importing ingredients and materials due to the drop in the pound, don't try to pretend that we're investing in the UK's own industries by paying higher prices.

You might want to look at what I was responding to first! ;) :p

Come on Nvidia, get that £900-1K Ti oot, we got the money burning a hole in our pockets here, were foaming at the mouths for em, all together now, GIMMIE! GIMMIE! GIMMIE!.............

:D

Even though there are many posturing about how much expendable income they have, just you wait till cards start hitting £1300+.

See how rich you are then...

It won't make much difference, there are a lot of people just buying them on credit. Someone else's money is always easier to spend ;)

Lol true.

I mean if you can afford and justify a single component that has around a 2 year life span for £1000+ then power to you, I'm jealous :p

However I can just see prices going up up and away killing my hobby of 12 years stone dead. I'd consider dropping up to £550 on a GPU but I'd want a 1080ti for that which will never happen.

My 290 only cost me £320ish 2 years ago and that was deemed pretty top end at the time. Now top end is £600+ :(

£320 for a "top end" card that runs most things well @1080 ?

Unless you are going for higher resolution, that card probably still copes quite well. The equivalent (or maybe slightly better ?) new card, an RX480 is ~£260.

Most things we buy have increased in price over the years. We were "spoiled" in the early days of PC gaming. Performance was increasing rapidly and prices tended to remain the same or even fall. I'm not suprised that we're paying ~£400 for a GPU with over 7 billion transistors and 8GB of very fast VRAM.

Compare gaming PCs to cars (hot hatches). A Golf GTI is more powerful and better equipped than it was 15-20 years ago, but it also costs a fair bit more.

Cake and eating it etc.

No one is being forced to buy anything.

Even the lower end card provides a solid gaming experience for most people.

If you want 4k, you want to aim for 100fps, you want everything on high - all before the market is actually ready - you have to pay for it, but as I said very early on, your not forced to do this.

I don't understand the point of these threads or the constant whinging. If you have the money then buy what your comfortable with, stop being so hung up on what other people have/will spend.

I'd love to go to 1440 but all it means is GPUs struggling sooner in their life cycle and buying higher end cards. I'll be sticking to 1080p :(

Just a shame, PCs are great tools if you can use them to their full power and capabilities. Will soon get to the stage where I can't justify £2000 for a system to purely play games.

My 290 still does cope but BF1 has been giving it a bit of a kicking. Could be my old 2500k though.

If they were too expensive, then they wouldn't sell, they'd just be left on the shelves/in warehouses, just gathering dust, and then Nvidia would drop their prices, but they're not, we only have ourselves to blame, as no matter what prices Nvidia churn them out for, we will not, and can not, stop buying them, Nvidia are only giving us what we want!.

Pretty much this, somethings only worth what people are prepared to pay for it and plenty are buying 1080's

Is there any actual sales figures for units sold? I presume your on about the Titan XP?

They are a very low volume niche product. Of course there are people who can afford it but they are in the 0.1%.

All that does in turn jacks up the prices for all tiers of cards below it.

This and is already happening for me. I like to keep up with tech hence why I'm here posting but there's a big wide world out there. If people want to indulge retailers on these obscene mark-ups inflaming the market higher and higher , go for your life.. I won't be joining in. :)

Obscene mark-ups ?

Bought a pack of fixing bolts/screws from a DIY store recently ?

No overheating VRMs. No coil whine. No dodgy VRAM. Little chance of the customer breaking one and returning it. Pretty much sell it and forget it. Screws and bolts don't often get replaced by a newer model either.
