Anyone just given up on looking for a new GPU?

Maybe this episode will reset the mind set of those who need to have a new GPU every 6 months when a new one comes out, go back to how things used to be a bit and get your money's worth out of the one you have.

Just out of curiosity. I had a look on auction at a few rx580 cards up for sale there, hows this for madness, 1 x sapphire pulse rx580 4gb just sold for £203 s/h!
If you think thats dumb, theres 2 x 580 8gb already up £240 s/h, and one of 'em still has a few hours to!
If thats not an indication prices/supply/demand are out of control, and desperation/resignation I don't know what is.

I reckon this insanity will start to calm down in a month or two. The 5700XT's were selling for £580-£600 just last week but now it's around £550 average. Watch the trend and it will probably drop to around £520 by next week. The higher cards will follow as the demand from consumers drops away gradually as more people get their cards at extortionate prices.

Agree. In the past we use to get huge jumps every year, double the speeds or more (talking many years back now) and was worth doing. Now it's a total waste of time and money to update every new generation. I now have a 4-5 year cycle with GPUS and CPUS on the main rig, updating every generation doesn't show massive benefits anymore. Also with the prices of top end GPUs and CPUs now, it is insane to keep changing all the time for a few % increase in most cases.

I honestly think this situation is going to on longer than people are hoping it will. Theres a lowering in the prices these s/h cards are getting due to Xmas being over for another year maybe, but, IF mining continues as it is, theres going to be increased scarcity of All cards stretching well into the summer. Theres factors involved here that are unprecedented (mining, covid, greed, supply chains, etc, you name it) so its gonna be hard to predict whats going to happen this year (God, I'm a miserable, pessimistic old git) and I really hope I'm wrong for everyone sake.

Well if next gen consoles can hit their RRP this year and PC components can't, it doesn't take a genius to work out what's going to happen.

Nice surge in console ownership and people delaying or abandoning PC builds.

Except for those folk to whom money isn't an object (these people, along with miners, are clearing everything out atm). 6800XT for a grand is just lol.

This reminds me of the housing bubble. I could have sold my house for a LOT more than I thought it was worth, but then I would have had to sleep in my car or buy or rent something else that was also way overpriced.

With PC parts, in this environment, I want to have "parts on hand" just in case. -Because I can't "just buy" replacement parts now. I could sell my old 1080Ti, but neither my monitor nor my VR headset will work if I plug it into a stack of paper bills.

Well I guess it's better than selling them at a higher price, but it still seems somewhat ridiculous to tie up so many cards for weeks when most people can't find any at all. It's like "I'm buying not because I need but because I can".

I bought them to use, not to hoard till i was able to settle on the one i wanted to keep.

So the 3060ti was for my daughters xmas, the 3080 i sold on when i snagged a 3090FE, swapped that for a 3070ti and cash while i waited for my 6800XT to be delivered. 6800 i wanted a bit more for my pc than it was giving so i decided to upgrade when i saw the merc at a good price.

Yup, some people are also forgetting that even if you snag one of these cards, if it has problems there might not be any replacements for a while. Knowing my luck, i'd be one of those.

For most, it's best to wait until the situation rights itself instead of bending over backwards. Hopefully this side of june.

Yes and I am sure that people don't realise the trouble they are buying when they get their card off ebay - even if it is new.

Forgive my HORRIBLE assumptions! *bows*

Nope! :D Managed to snag a RTX 3070 for RRP at only £469 in November and now swapping it out for a RTX 3090 I got at RRP for only £1,399 this week.

Keep searching, sign-up to stock notification and register your address/account details on the sites you are keeping track of and have your card ready. As soon as you get the notification, stop what you are doing and go buy. :)

I think for many gamers it's a bling thing. Bragging rights. Either that or they think that the latest hi-tech will give them hugely better performance ( when often it won't because they don't have the supporting gear ). Or perhaps it's hype for new games? I think a lot of people were buying new hardware in anticipation of Cyberpunk. I don't know. But I think there are fairly few number who really benefit from seasonal updates. I mean for most of my years I have updated, especially in recent years though, thanks to all the great new monitors coming out.

I have two pc's, one with a 2070s and the other with a 980ti. I was looking to upgrade the 980ti, however, having used it for so long and given the extreme prices, I have just been reducing some settings. So will wait now until things settle down. Im certainly not going to pay scalpers or hugely over the odds from retailers.

Same here. I bought a new monitor for number one PC and really needed to upgrade the 2070S, but with the current insanity, and now NVIDIA indicating this is going to continue until May, I have given up until June ish. Spent the money now, so that decision can't be undone.

wonder how many 3080's/3090's have been purchased for 1080p? :D

More time to amass savings in my case, although with what I've saved so far, I could buy several of these already. Just waiting for availability.

auction sites has plenty of 3070s, 3060ti, fewer 3080s, and some 3090s. Some vendors also bring in the 3070s at least from time to time, I'd say at least once a day, you got to keep looking. OC has a staple 3090 stock. You'd pay ~ £720 for a good 3070 ( 3 fans, OC ) on both ebay and other vendors. I managed to buy 3 x 3070s (returned one, expecting the other still), missed on another 2 or 3 3070s as they "disappeared" from my basket as I was trying to pay. Almost bought off a couple on ebay but shops are same price or lower and you buy new, so why pay inflated ebay prices. Currently very happy with the EVGA 3070 XC3 Ultra, it says "OC 1770MHz" on specs, but it always runs at 1950MHz-2050MHz on my most demanding game, not sure why. It can run WoW at ~40% utilisation, Subnautica at 75%-95%, all at 4K. I believe it would struggle at 4K @ 120Hz, maybe the 3080...
