Anyone non-panic buying?

Stop answering questions with questions.

Why has brexit not allowed us to get a preferential supply of these goods? That's the minimum standard it should be delivering for us.

Er maybe because we are not wiling to pay higher prices like the EU.

Jumping into this at 24 pages but we get what we deserve.

When the problems start the EU will prioritise their their own, we are no longer their own.

Farmers have veg rotten in the fields because we wont pick it, the slobs just want to sit on benefits and the Eastern Europeans are no longer coming in their thousands.

I blame (obviously) the Brexiteers, the "Rule Britannia" brigade who believe we are still some kind of upper class who don't need anyone.

The young ones, like my daughters were devastated by Brexit because they wanted free travel round Europe, one is still travelling in Europe but it is costing her, well me, a small fortune in the red tape we are now wrapped in.

Fun fact, the pensioners (rule Britannia) brigade I was talking about have mostly died off now, they were the ones who pushed it over the edge.

If there was another vote tomorrow it would go the other way, we should be lobbying for another vote tbh.

Not looking to upset any Brexiteers in here because I know you now repent for the huge mistake you made. Just say 3 hail Marys and all is forgiven

Really? Then why are there shortages in Ireland? Does the EU hate the Irish?? Are they not a proper member?

Banning sending to food to Africa is not a good look..

Tomatoes are grown in other countries in Africa:

There is no news indicating a shortage anywhere in West Africa.

The ban is actually to protect the domestic market mainly. But Morocco also supplies Europe, so they try to continue that as much as they are able to, but not to the UK.

Yeah, I agree. If it was true that the vaccine rollout was delivered more quickly due to flexibility and emancipation from EU regulation, how come we can't do the same thing with tomatoes?

Or was that just bull****?

Answers carved into a turnip please.

Do you really think if we offered to pay more than the EU does they wouldn't jump on that?

Plus I'd take the UK vaccine roll out over any fruit and veg lol.. Im sure all the people in Europe that died waiting for vaccines would have too..

The prices here are now higher than when we’re in the EU. I was in France yesterday and the prices aren’t higher than here. Inflation is lower on the continent than it is in the UK.

...you mean they are supplying to the highest bidder? Fair enough..

The EU doesn't supply tomatoes. After all this time do you still not know what the EU is?

It's clear the logistics for suppliers is more complicated for Ireland, leading to increased costs, on top of already increased costs due to the bad weather. Hence the suppliers are not sending tomatoes to Ireland, predicting that the Irish would not pay the resulting prices. It's all pretty straightforward.

You mean the price of tomatoes has gone up when supply is restricted - mind blown..

Corrected :)

its a free market and there are no 'food shortages' - there are plenty of alternatives - stop being such a drama queen.

There are food shortages, quite clearly. Pretending there aren't because you'll eat a turnip instead is just nonsense.

We were promised brexit would make us more competitive on the world stage but the reality seems to be that we don't even have the financial strength to afford tomatoes on the free market, so we have to 'choose' to lose out.

Supermarkets buy produce not governments.

With your responses I doubt you have to ability to understand, but bigger market does not mean highest bidder. I could well see the UK offering to pay more to the suppliers, but it's not a free market when some countries are on an export ban list (including probably the UK, as per a previous link).

Of course if we paid more then we wouldn't have shortages. But then that takes weeks and months doesn't it? The suppliers have to agree new deals with the growers, the supermarkets have to agree deals with the suppliers and we then have to pay more for our produce. Brilliant. Who wouldn't think this was the answer to a short term supply issue? Essentially, in order to avoid shortages right now, we have had to already have been paying higher prices. Anyone got a time-machine handy?

My question is that if they were telling the truth about a faster vaccine rollout being enabled by Brexit, then why isn't the same hold true for tomatoes? I would have thought that was obvious to everyone, but plainly you lack the simple comprehension skills required. I apologise and will endeavour to be more inclusive in future.
