**** Apple Event "Spring loaded" - 20th April 2021 @ 18:00 UK time ****

Will probably pick up a 4 pack of the AirTags. Will try using one with one of my cats. It's an indoor cat so would only be for emergencies in case he escaped. I've got a proper tracker on my cat that goes outdoors.

Interested in the new iMac. Can it also be used as a second monitor too?

I do wonder if the M1 will be iterated on every year like the A chips are or if they plan a longer life span for them.

If anything they seem to have been going the other way by brining iOS app integration into MacOS devices.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Final Cut, etc announced for iPad at WWDC in June because based on current functionality in iPadOS the tech specs seem like total overkill.

What purpose would FCPX on iPad serve though - there is literally no way to have any import workflow or storage for proper footage (raw, prores etc)? Same goes for iMac, it's another "no one asked for this" Apple device - ipad with two usb-c ports running MacOS. Not even SD card slot... It's a £1700 web browsing device with 8Gb of ram and tiny storage for kids... Because "thin!".

Because it would sell, there are people already doing their video production on the iPad Pro full time, and they don't seem to have any issues. That's why they'd do it. I personally don't need more than the baseline storage, but wouldn't pay Apple's costs for an increase in the internal storage anyway so would just get a Thunderbolt storage device regardless.

One thing I don't like is the addition of a power brick, I think that's a bit of a shame, but the return of a magnetic power cable is excellent.

I'm pleased with the screen on the new iMac, I was worried that at 24" they would go with 4K which isn't up to the usual Apple levels. The 24" LG UltraFine 4K has always been a little lacking and effectively only displays 1920x1080 when using retina pixel doubling.

Here's how the new screen measures up in terms of PPI and effective resolution when using pixel doubling.

21.5 Retina iMac
Native: 4096 x 2304
Retina: 2,048 x 1152
PPI: 218.58 pixels per in

24" M1 iMac
Native: 4480 x 2520
Retina: 2,240 x 1,260
PPI: 218.73 pixels per in

24" LG UltraFine
Native: 3840 x 2160
Retina: 1920 x 1,080
PPI: 185.9 pixels per in

27" 5K iMac
Native: 5120 x 2880
Retina: 2560 x 1440
PPI: 217.57 pixels per in

2,240 x 1,260 on the 24" (23.5) will be a very nice amount of space, very usable. It will look extra crispy with the proper amount of PPI.

Plenty of people seem to be asking for it, Logic Pro and Xcode; although good luck coding on a Magic Keyboard with no function keys!
I think there are likely to be big updates for iPadOS in June; it just doesn't make sense to release something with this power/memory without it.

If I were to buy I'd probably pay the extra for 1TB/16GB RAM in the interests of future proofing but its vast overkill I think for anything I'd really be doing with it (Photo Editing is likely the biggest taxing the device would be getting).
Is that a proper power brick for the iPad now?

Ah sorry, I meant to put that the Power Brick was for the iMac, I assume that the iPad doesn't have one still. Pre-coffee responses are never good.

I don’t get the criticism of the iMac, let’s not forget this is a small low end version and a direct replacement for the 21.5” version. A more powerful, larger 32” is expected later in the year.

The 24” iMac is more than enough computer for 95% of users which is ultimately who Apple target. The speaker and mic upgrades will likely be excellent based on their laptops and the M1 is more than enough CPU/GPU. The I/O looks ‘fine’.

Why does the power brick matter? It’s a desktop computer, no one really cares.

My only complaint about it is the colours, I just don’t like them. Silver is the only one that is actually ‘nice’.

I'm with you. The only people who seem to be moaning are people who expected a pro device. It's the same people complaining about the M1 Air/ 13 MBP, when again they aren't targeted at pros.

"These entry level iMacs are rubbish, I cannot edit 10 streams of 8K RAW and drive 6 external 5K monitors" like why are you even looking at these iMacs lol!

The colours are way too pastel for me, the silver will be the most popular I imagine. I love the colours they have on the back but then the pastel tones on the front. The red is basically pink on the front.

I kinda want to buy the purple iPhone, I had no intention of changing my iPhone XS :(

I'd definitely jump on the new Apple TV if my TV didn't have the Apple app, I still might but I'm not in a rush.

iMac looks ideal for standard family Mac / corporate office Mac / shop front of house....which is pretty much exactly what SKU it replaces. The only thing I don't get is the white bezel.

My guess is they are going to go black bezel and space grey on the pro iMacs, giving them a very clear separation in style. I think they should have included the Apple logo on the chin though, looks a bit bare.

I think the new iMacs look really good and in design terms Apple has almost nailed it - only the white bezel looks out of place as you've commented. These things will start popping up in all sorts of places where image is key.

Yes lack of logo will take some getting used to! Makes me think of those placeholder iMacs you'd see in TV shows that don't have the license for showing the logo

Maybe they will offer emoji engraving on the chin :D seems to be the new Apple thing...

The more I look at the new iMac, the more I appreciate the weird design. It's ultimately a bottom of the barrel, low-end machine*. It's not meant to be a fancy, smart-looking machine, that will come with the high-end models when we'll see Space Grey, Black etc. But for now, they're meant to be family machines and the design cues on it suit that perfectly.

I hope by the time the high end versions come, or the Pro versions, they look a lot less VTech and go back to the smarter colours

* Performance may be good but that's just a result of using the M1, but it is still a low-end machine that isn't going to be used for any real productivity work-flows

Yeah that's what I'm guessing as well, I actually don't think the larger iMac will just be a scaled up version of this, but a different design with professional colours.

That's what a lot of people often missed with M1 macbooks as well, comparing them with top-of-the-line Intel/AMD parts, just because they're that good that can be competitive at that range doesn't mean they're products of that range, these are low-end stuff made for the cheapest laptops/desktops out there. Competitors to Core i3/i5 stuff.‌ There's still 12-18 months until we see a full range of products.

The only other (really quite picky) criticism I have over the colours is the Ethernet implementation. It’s unnecessarily complicated (read expensive) and just screams form over function which is Apple all over.

I know why they did it, because it didn’t fit within the confines of the chassis. But it is a solution to a problem that didn’t really need to exist. It also makes additional or replacement power bricks more costly than they need to be.
