Apple Pay Launch - How will it be activated?

Used it this morning on the commute into work. Opened passbook as I walked to gate, popped my thumb on then held phone to the card reader. No delay, in fact appeared slightly faster than contactless with my AMEX, but naturally a smidgen slower than Oyster.
Is that step required? I thought you could just hold your phone against the reader and the prompt for touchID would pop up, or have I got that wrong?

Correct, you just hold the phone to the terminal with your thumb on the home button/touch ID and it will do it. You don't have to unlock or even wake the phone

Fella in the apple shop showed me this morning... When you place your phone near an NFC terminal you don't press anything, passbook opens, showing the cards you have (you can swipe to select the card you want to use). Just place the thumb on the sensor to complete the transaction. It was very easy simple and quick with the demonstration that he gave me.

Obviously, with the Apple watch there is no authorisation required (as far as I am aware?) but you might be limited to the £20/30 limit regardless of whether the merchant has signed up to Apple Pay... (not 100% sure on this though)

Although obviously not as secure as TouchID, the Watch requires a passcode to be enabled if you are using Apple Pay, and will probably only work if it's being worn on the wrist and has been unlocked via the passcode or the users iPhone.

That is correct, but you don't want to be that guy at the gate who gets there with his thumb on the fingerprint reader for it not to work near instantaneously. You will quickly become the most hated person in the City if you hold anyone up for more than a millisecond.

So I prefer to have it 'prepped' as once you've done it you have a minute between authorising and needing to tap.

I love being that guy, I turn around and look at everyone's angry faces and imagine myself in a "Thug life" video

One thing that I like about this is the ability for me to stop staff using contactless for me.

Whilst it might not seem much to them (or others), I like to check the amount before paying, and whilst I've never had a problem, they might put in the wrong amount etc... Having got hold the phone (card) is a bonus in my eyes as i can check everything.

Loaded up my NatWest mobile banking app yesterday and it asked me if I wanted to activate/sign up for apple pay. I declined as I still don't really have the foggiest idea what it actually is.
