I'm level 70 something still have missions to do and only just started going to Stella Montis. Feels like a maze. On my third run (night raid) felt totally lost managed to make it to a raider hatch then realised they are shut. With less than three minutes left and no shield I found my way to an extraction point. As I went to call the lift I heard a shredder. I was downed but managed to extract with Aphelion BP and vita shot BP.

I am rubbish with directions and I really struggle with the map layout of Stella Montis as well. I am getting better however still have probably a 50% failure rate on that map.

I like the missions, it gives me some purpose. I definitely hope to do them all before I go on an expedition. in future runs however I suspect once I get to the showstopper blueprint I may not bother so much

You know what, provided you are on the good list so you can more freely move about, I'd almost work back from the exits.
So find one, then go away from it in several directions, remembering where you have been.
Learning the exits is the most important on that map.
Sometimes there are subtle little ziplines that you need to take to access where you wana go, one down near the seed vault for example, not always obvious.
Don't get me wrong I'm don't know the map that well either as I have always avoided it in the past, but I've been playing it more recently and find that helps.
Killed my first matriarch this evening, got two reactors. Then tooled up again and went in, got caught off guard by a bastion and it downed me. 6 raiders stood around me and not one of them had a defib.

I've always got them on me, saved a few folks with them, they're always extremely grateful. I am the dude from Hacksaw Ridge.
So I'm level 22, just been solo raiding. Found a couple of grenade and weapon attachment BPs but no weapons yet. Got a couple of benches to L2. Done probably a dozen quests but they are getting quite hard and very specific now.
Usually head out with looting or combat aug 2 (the ones you swap for the free loadout augments), L4 ferro and L4 stitcher. I do ok against the flying Arc and try and avoid PVP. Struggling to see what I do next or where I go from here.
Levelled up Scrappy twice so got loads of crafting materials and seeds, I never use them as I don't really have anything to craft. I've used that many free loadouts I have so many augs and weapons, basic shields and ammo.
I go out, kill a few of the easy arc, loot absolutely nothing of any note. Get home, do it again. I have nothing to take on the larger arc with so avoid them. I have no reason to level up the benches as I have nothing to craft. Stuck in a bit of an endless and pointless loop, I love the gameplay and the lore but feel like I am just wasting my time.

Team up, do some of the quests. Find your preferred loadout by experimenting (explore all of the items even if they at first seem rubbish). Dont burn out by going in and extracting pointlessly unless its to get experience fighting ARC. If I'm solo farming for something I take in a hatch key.

do the missions prioritising the ones for the gun seller, eventually you will get rewarded a blue print for the hullcracler. this will allow you to take out all the mid tier ARC with relative ease (but still enjoyable) (bombadiers,. leapers,. rocketeers and bastion).. if you can get the trailblazer or Wolfpack they are quite easy to use and effective.
i.find myself with a stupid amount of keys and they take a lot of space so now I routinely take a key with me to help increase my chances of high grade loot.

Not my situation, but it's definitely possible.
I've seen something similar, they were just watching the downed guy in a silent circle of three (solos) so I ran in and defibbed him.
I wasn't going to, I actually ran to the sound of the flare hoping to loot a body if I'm honest. But I felt disgust while watching them, which is a strong way for a game to make you feel. Made me re-evalute my actions in that moment given I had a defib on me.
If they hadn't all been standing like statues, obviously trying to be the first to loot him once he died it might not have bothered me so much.
After that I ran off before anyone decided they really wanted his loot.
Or mine.
There's nothing wrong with them playing that way if they want to. But seeing it from the outside made me not want to be quite so much of a vulture when I had the option to save the guy.
Normally I don't have a defib on me so it isn't a question, but I was just out of medical and into the loading bay on SM which gave me the choice.
No idea what happened after, but I didn't hear any gunshots.
Maybe none of them had defibs and were free loadouts like me. But they were tooled up enough to take down the bastion, so probably not freebies at least.
Not the first "no defib" moment I've seen or been a 'victim' of, nor will it be the last.
But I've seen plenty of the opposite as well, and had strangers res me without me needing to ask many times.

I've got one in my stash if you want it.
Assembly is without a doubt the most reliable place for them. I regularly pick up one or two if it hasn't been ransacked already.
I've been giving them away I find them so often. That's always the case though when you are not looking for something.
