Are you proud to be British?

Let’s be honest, it’s mainly those of a left-wing, Guardian-reading bent and their infestation of schools, workplaces and politics who would have us believe that being English - and even more heinously, English and white - is something to be ashamed of. The very fact that it gets up the nose of these guilt-ridden clowns is one reason why I’ll always loudly admit I’m English and proud of it.

I agree there. I think there is still a serious class problem in this country. Being looked down upon by the upper classes is normal in some social circles.

I wouldn't say I was proud, or not proud. Its not really something I have ever thought about generally.

I am proud to be my own person and content with life :p

British means nothing. When I look at the politicians I just feel embarrassed especially when anyone finds out I are from the country. There is little in the country to make you proud and then it is generally the actions of ordinary people who usually do not get mentioned.

It's a difficult question to answer as an Englishmen.

I feel if I where Irish, Scottish or Welsh then I'd not only have significantly MORE pride for where I was born, but distinctly LESS pride for being 'British, considering how consistently fresh and specific patriotism is in these countries.

Being Patriotic in England is such a loaded sentiment these days. I'm certainly proud of much of it's culture. Our openly comedic, satirical and self-abasing nature, our fantastically rich music history and our ability to make light of everything. But there's something about being 'English' that's just a touch.... icky. Maybe it's our bloody history or perhaps our modern day politics, but I dunno.

That lack of any real pride in my land is something I've always felt I'll struggle with in later life.

I'm pretty weird in that I am proud to be british but also think the british as a collective are some of the scummiest people I've come across.

When on holiday anywhere in europe the amount of chavvy brittish scumbags is an embarrassment and generally people in other countries are way friendlier and approachable than british people.

That is the general problem with being proud about where you were born. If you take pride in the historic actions of others then how do you distinguish between the good aspects and the bad? Britain has committed many atrocities. You can't just pick and choose which parts of history that you had nothing to do with you are some how associated with.

Brits abroad are the worst. I've no idea why

Maybe it's something to do with the language - English being widely spoken Worldwide.

If there was more of a barrier I would think it might make people a bit more cautious/respectful? I've seen Brits just being absolutely horrible to natives whilst holidaying in their country.

That's very true, but I'm talking more about how those travesties are still being felt so close to home, not just overseas. I don't think it's the history itself so much as it is the many right wingers who still wish for the England of old to be a thing today. There's still a fierce pride to be found for those days. That sort of politics isn't specific to England of course, but it's where I know it best because I live here.

Just recently I was really ashamed to be British. I live in the vineyards, my landlord is a winemaker as everyone in the village. There was a wine festival, where the winemakers open their cellars, offer lots fo wine and food and you are expected to buy a few bottles or a box of a dozen or so. The French, swiss, Germans, Spanish, greek and Italians grouops I spoke to all understood this. Of course multiple grouops of chavy Brits turned up, drank countless bottles of wine (they were by far the most drunk and disorderly) and at lots of food and each group left without buying a single bottle, and not even saying thank you to the winemaker (and of course not saying a word of French). Speaking to the landlord he reckons he lost around 2000CHF of wine and food to the different British grouops so next year they probably wont join the festival unless they can organize something like mandatory drinking tickets that get refunded when you buy X bottles of wine. Otherwise the Brits will just continue to completely exploit the wine tasting to get drunk.

It doesn't make much sense to me - being proud of a nationality. What are you being proud of? Stuff other people did (just not those ones over there). And what stuff? Just the good bits i'm guessing.

Britain could certainly benefit from a colonic. I can think of 3 highly dense, extremely unpleasant nuggets that need flushing out.

I imagine Skunkworks is the the kind of guy who goes to house parties and stands in the kitchen all night by himself mumbling about cultural marxists and anti white racism to anyone unfortunate enough to be in earshot.

@BowdonUK

I'm not sure that I understand your post fully.

Are you suggesting that the upper classes are made up of a left-wing majority and that these then look-down on the middle or working classes or have I misunderstood? Happy to be corrected.

It's also noticeable on the planes as well. When travelling to popular holiday destinations when majority of people on board are British it makes me sick getting off the plane and see rubbish everywhere. In contrast when going to less popular destinations in central/ eastern Europe the planes are pretty much spotless on arrival there.

Yourself, Roar87 and Adnams Drinker for starters form the last pages, I quite agree.

What, for pointing out I found it hilarious that immigrants in London don't feel British? As if that needed pointing out to anyone. Also, sky is blue.

Of course I am proud to be British and English, one only has to look at the tourist numbers who flock here to enjoy our rich heritage, culture and history. Couldn't imagine wanting to be anything other, we, as a smallish island enjoy world recognition for so much. It'll be better when we get the blue passports back again of course.... ;)
