Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead

ordered both Arma2 and OA for £29 :) so should i install Arma2 then patch 1.07 then OA or not bother patching Arma2 as OA will do it? read somewhere OA merges into Arma2 making a megagame or summat?

It will patch you to 1.06 after you install AO, although as mentioned, this isnt the latest version (v1.07 is).

You then can update to the new AO patch just recently released.

And yes, it does make the whole thing a 'super' game, which is great because in essence, all you have to load up is Arma2:AO and all the single player campaigns and missions are built into it, as well as the whole armoury of weapons etc between new and older maps.

I'm going to try and install a copy of XP to test out the performance. I remember reading that it suffers badly under Vista and Windows 7 considerably, and XP offered a substantial boost in performance, which is all i want because this game is damn good! :)

To anyone having performance issues make sure of the following:

1. You are NOT running the -winxp command on your EXE (Drops FPS by half due to reverting patch fixes)

2. If you have crossfire you rename Arma2OA.exe to Arma2.exe (enables crossfire) (If you have Combined Arms, rename Arma2.exe to Arma2Backup or something)

3. Turn down PP to low or OFF

4. Don't go nuts with the AA, it really doesn't do much, low is usually good

Working fine for me with all settings maxed @ 2048x1152 :) AA is on LOW and PP is off with 3.6k VD with 60 FPS solid for the most part.

If you have dual/quad/hex cores (Which you all most certainly have) then adding the following to your OA shortcut will make use of all of your cores.

Dual-Core processor:
-nosplash -cpucount=2 -exThreads=1
Quad-Core processor:
-nosplash -cpucount=4 -exThreads=7
Hexacore processor:
-nosplash -cpucount=6 -exThreads=7

for example if you have a quad core like me then you would do the following:
Open your OA shortcut by right clicking it and select properties (not the main .exe, it has to be a shortcut). There should be a directory that is in quotes e.g. "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\arma 2 operation arrowhead\ArmA2OA.exe".

Add the "-nosplash -cpucount=4 -exThreads=7" to the end of the quotes so it looks like this:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\arma 2 operation arrowhead\ArmA2OA.exe" -nosplash -cpucount=4 -exThreads=7

Click apply and then OA should now make use of all of your cores. :D

It worked for me. I have a Q6600 and when I ran the benchmark for OA the average fps went from 25 to 37. There are more tips on how to improve your performance on the official arma 2 forums.

Stuff......

Interested in trying this out on my Q6600, stupid question time though - How do I run the benchmark test?.

Also, adding the Quad support shortcut thingy, does the game require to be patched first with the update for it to do anything improvement wise?.

the benchmark is in the single player > missions/Armoury section.

Steam apps ? What about DVD install ? Thanks.

I know you specifically mentioned OA but I gave it a shot with regular Arma 2 and it didn't do anything for fps. Just for the people out there who still can't run Arma 2 with their 4GHz quad cores and 5850/5870 ATIs (like me)... still 20fps in towns and 22fps in Benchmark 2.
