Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead

31st of march late at night by any chance?

its just a reskinned mh-6 and Huey venom

2pm UK time and again, the models are similar but not the same, glaring differences if you'd actually take the time to compare pics of those in the article and those in ArmA2, well you wouldn't say that if you did.
Oh and when it comes to making semi-accurate models, it's going to look the same anyway, after all it's a model of a real world helicopter.

obviously they are not exactly the same but dont you think its a coincidence that they announce it a few hours before April Fools and that the only screen shots are of some helicopter models that already exist in ARMA that they have reskinned to look civilian

if its not an april fools then they have knocked up this game really quickly on the cheap using ARMA II assets

So not exactly the same then?

I think the whole point of the april fools is to do it on the 1st no? so in this case i think it is pure coincidence that this has appeared so close to april 1st

Really quickly???. They have announced they are making a helicopter sim using the ARMA engine which is a great idea since it clearly can scale well and helicopters are already there so that helps you remove certain stages. Do we even know when they started working on this? could have been a very long time ago.

Also the first idea of release date is Q4 2011 which is still a while off and would any of us be shocked if we didnt see this before Xmas?

Ok I'm going to step in here. :)

This is not an April Fool's. I work with VBS2 (that's the military simulation engine that the ARMA series runs off of), so I tend to stay up to date on the market, plus sometimes get to see what ARMA players will be getting whilst they're being released to the military/defense industry.

Whilst this doesn't sound like something I've noticed recently in VBS2, it does fit in perfectly with an upcoming change to the DIS protocol, which will introduce a much more detailed civilian aspect to the protocol. This is exactly the sort of game I would expect to come out of that, and Q4 sounds just about right given the timescales I've been hearing about. :)

Fair enough!

maybe they need to work on timing though - April 1st isnt the best time to announce new things that are a departure from the usual!

As has already been said, this was announced on March 31st. Not late 31st, early 31st. Their timing is fine. :)

Hmm I have Arma 2 + OA and both DLC and really want to play it, however it runs like a dog on my system, using as low as 30% GPU in town / city environments. Is this because the game is so CPU limited? Is there nothing I can do to improve performance whilst maintaining at least some visuals?

I am running an i7 920 at 4ghz and a gtx 580 running at 1080p, and I have to lower the settings to minimum with very low draw distance, just to achieve a playable framerate in these areas.

Urm...wow, with that set up i dont understand how you dont have a decent fps on top settings. Very CPU intensive game but an I7 should really cover that, if you looks at my rig in my sig, i get all max settings and 25fps to 35 always whatever the enviroment. Very curious with yours, im not sure what you could do?

Doesnt sound quite right but it can always use more cpu. Try processlasso and gamebooster

Depends what fps you mean, Im down to 15 sometimes but still mostly playable I'd say. I can deal with 2 threads, you can do 8 right

That is a high res, turn off AA and the after effects

Like I said it's with all the bells and whistles turned off, I can run it maxed out in other areas over 60, as soon as I am looking at a town / city I get a huge drop.

I always monitor my GPU usage and as I said it's in these areas that it is low, so there must be some kind of bottleneck. I can turn the settings up and GPU usage can sometimes increase to accommodate, but my minimums will only be lower, and minimums in this game aren't just for a few seconds... Personally I can't stand anything below 30 fps in a shooter, which I can almost achieve, in multiplayer it is much worse though.

I could possibly be very anal when it comes to frame rate, but surely this means that even if I was to add another card, assuming this is a CPU bottleneck, I would not see an improvement.

I just want to know if there are any other people here experiencing the same issues as me on high end hardware, notably low GPU usage, or if anyone knows of some kind of magic fix / mod. The game has the potential to look incredible, but as I have to play it (aliased with low quality textures and no foliage on the ground) it actually makes me quite sick.

Also I have no problems like this in any other games I play, and vram usage doesn't exceed my limit. If I turn the resolution down then GPU usage will drop lower and I will still achieve the same FPS.
