Assange to go!

I expect the immediate return of my passport and the termination of further attempts to arrest me

Good luck with that, seeing as you're still going to get arrested for skipping bail, and quite possibly be facing charges of contempt of court.

Smug, arrogant little ****.

Fingers crossed that we can finally send him back tomorrow:

I am going to guess that he knew the likely way the judgement was going to go before issuing the statement.

How on earth the UN could rule that it was arbitrary detention I have no idea. Since when was hiding in an embassy to escape arrest arbitrary detention? He is choosing to be there rather than follow due process.

It's not all about the embassy, there was also the groundless solitary confinement in 2010. Also I think (reading between the lines) they're saying the charges in Sweden were weak and likely to end up in his being extradited to the USA, where he'd be unlikely to fair treatment. The fact that he's "forced" to hide in the embassy is "effectively" arbitrary detention. In other words, he's not been tried nor found guilty of anything, yet he's trapped in a building against his will.

That opinion is backed by several other bodies too, e.g. the Center for Constitutional Rights.

Edit: the problem is he wouldn't be given "due process" (your words), his arrests was irregular from the very beginning and (probably) set up to lead to his punishment in the US. The trouble is they don't know what to do with him in the US (read this paragraph on wikileaks) so you can guarantee he'd be put away for some time while they worked out how to silence him.

Why would we go to the effort of extraditing him to Sweden when it is arguably easier to extradite him to the US from the UK? Or is the Swiss justice system some easy to abuse third world system? Have the Swedes made any suggestion that they would extradite him?

The article by the CCR is also somewhat biased, Assange has tried to dictate the terms of any interaction with the Swedish authorities.

The issue is very little in due process has been followed which has also been pointed out in the UN review.

Assange has still not been charged with an offence and even so a European Arrest Warrant was granted. UN reports that the UK arrest and detention was a little dubious.

It's all politics rather than the various governments trying to track down an alleged criminal. Of course there will be calls made by the US of A stating they want him over there to give him a fair trail

"Groundless solitary confinement"? This is nonsense. He was help between 7th December and 16th December in standard conditions at Wansworth Prison. He was under 23 and a half hour lockdown. There is nothing unusual or untoward about remanding someone to custody after they are arrested on serious sexual assault charges.
