Can anyone suggest any books to help me uderstand the basics of car setups (plain english stylee). I'm very much a "default set" racer, which leaves me a bit exposed when I feel the urge to race online.

Could just do a single track and a set of a few cars I guess? That way there's a bit of variation, incase some people don't like a certain class
