Assetto Corsa

I'm not sure whether I'm missing something or you're missing something here!

In a race you're never really going to lightly coast with slight brake pressure like when driving on the road (ie slowing for lights) - on the road unless you're performing an emergency stop you should never have to really get near max braking performance, whereas in a race it's the other way around. Very few situations where you aren't using the maximum braking force, main caveat to that being when car stability is an issue.

Brakes aren't binary, unless you are using ABS smashing the brakes on as hard as possible is just going to lock you up, not to mention throw the weight of the car about and mess up the balance (which you mentioned).

Unless I'm missing something, I'm not always trying to brake "as hard as possible".

I use light braking a LOT, usually left footing it too - in AC (I drive like a grandma in RL :D). Lightly dabbing the brakes is very useful when you want to transfer the weight of your car onto the front wheels - to prevent understeer or lean into the corner etc etc.

Like its explained here:

i think the best way to learn it in game is to push too hard.then gradually refine it.its not like you going to hurt yourself or do any real car damage.that way you find the limits pretty quickly.

braking to move the car as you want it is useful.nords always do it.thing is you dont want to be drifting sliding on tarmac as that is time lost.unless obviously its just fun and showboating :D

with downforce cars they just jam on the brakes really hard n fast, then ease off as the downforce comes off.

but that transition between braking and turning will help if its smooth, niels who does sim physics for automobilista and f3 teams said amature drivers tend to have a grip "cross" ie brake then off then turn, while pro's tend to have a grip circle, with smoother transitions...

hard part in sim's is you dont feel that brutalness of the amature way as you would in real life.

well the thing also is how many push cars to the limits ingames and realize they are ?

noticing whats happening and what should or not happen is not in everyone.some people for eg will just say the handling is off when it isnt its just how the car reacts.

also if you only driving a car at a certain limit you may only get part of whats happening.

also how you have the car set up or your set up for playing.

Does anyone drift in Assetto? Without stability control etc, I've everything off. :) Would be fun to go drifting in a group, use to do loads of group tandem drifts in Forza 4.

Just listen to those turbo spools <3 :D

The ones I've are mods, you don't have to set them up. But, depending what track I drift, I fiddle with the gear ratios, tyres and very rarely with the suspension. The mods I'm using are good straight out, adjusting little bits like gear ratios and suspension is usually a personal thing. I found that out when we started comparing our cars and setups.

I do from time to time :)

Loved LFS for drifting feel back in the day, but AC is even better as LFS has 2d suspension geometry and car on ice feel once the tires warm up. The only downer is my wheel isn't quick enough, feels like a RL slowish steering rack. Need thrustmaster t500... or more skill and patience :D

I'd read previously that the T500 was the only option (ignoring really high end wheels) for drifting, but it seems you only need that speed for letting the wheel position itself initially rather than spinning it yourself.
In Chris Harris' drifting tutorial (real life ) he says it's a bad habit to just let the wheel spin until you can do it properly, so I went with what he said :D Kicking the back out and putting in a turn of lock quickly as it steps out is pretty easy and works absolutely fine on my G25 - the lack of speed is an absolute non issue when driving like that. Once I'd got more comfortable doing that I've realised now that once familiar with a car, knowing how much power and lock I need for the drift, that I can just let the wheel do it's thing and it's plenty fast enough.

Yeah, the T500 is rapid for drifting. I'm assuming you're on the T300?

G29 :) Which is not bad by any means, like I said, a bit more skill on my part would do a lot more than a quicker wheel.
But, stuff like this is easier on a quicker wheel like t500.

@1:04 onwards

I used to use G27, it was ok. But, going from a car it just didn't feel right so sold that on. My mate is really good with the G27, atm I'm on a xbox 360 controller. I don't play enough to justify a wheel and a stand along with a seat, I can't put the wheel on my desk due to the weird shape it won't hold on.

Some time ago, when I was looking at learning. I watched Tsuchiya's tutorial, its a bit long but covers everything. Chris Harris is showing how to do a power slide/drift. He doesn't cover the handbrake which comes in so handy when you misjudge your speed or the corner. :p

Using an older version of the Thrustmaster Ferrari GT Experience (the original 3 in 1 variant) the steering is pretty much bang on can't fault it at all and I've found I can push the gamma up quite a bit now compared to what I mentioned before once I got the right balance of settings. Main problem is the flappy paddles are pretty much unusable - one of them is broken any how and when they did work just not upto quick use in rapid speed changes and with my setup the lip of the chair stops me getting my leg/foot over from accelerator to brake quickly enough :( (as mentioned IRL reasons I don't want to adjust to using left foot braking).

Hoping to put together a dedicated setup eventually but I've just got waaay too much stuff and not enough space at the moment.

I try on the G27, but cannot do it at all, we'll not with no aids and 900degree.
Not tried with aids. I went om a server the other day and everyone was amazing, I guess they had the aids on
