Assistance - Calling all Samsung EVO owners

Inherent design flaw, so a straight forward warranty issue, even if Samsung try to claim otherwise. The fact they released a "fix" for it as well would prove beyond any doubt that it's an issue if you were forced to take them to court for a refund.

Thanks. :)

Samsung :(

Looks like it's time to recommend people against getting their drives the way they're handling this.

Already doing just that.

I`ve now switched back to Crucial.

Yes, I highly recommended Samsung SSDs. There was always the possibility that TLC NAND might be "too clever" for it's own good, but I thought Samsung knew what they were doing.

They might prove us wrong and manage to solve the issue with firmware, but I'm starting to doubt it now.

Very poor response from technical support too - "seems quite normal". Lol ! "Quite normal" for an Evo, maybe.

it depends whether the fault is fixable or not

ie a controller/fw bug or a design flaw with tlc nand

its obvious they will try to shrug it off

What kind of grounds is a refund in order? Surely this product was broken from the beginning? And by the looks of things, isn't going to be fixed.

Fired off a support message to them. They better not say it's normal!

They'll be "wriggling" just like NVIDIA are doing at the moment.

If they take decisive action, it'll go a long way to restoring confidence in the brand. If they deny there's a problem, I think they'll deserve every bit of bad publicity they get. All I expected was "yes, there does seem to be an issue (still), our technicians are investigating.

The worse thing they could do is shrug it off. A lot of people had faith in Samsung SSDs and would have continued to buy 850 EVOs. You'd be quite foolish to do so now, especially if they shrug off the issue with the 840 EVOs and continue to ignore the issue with the 840 non-EVOs.

My guess is that it is a design flaw with TLC NAND. However, all is not lost, because I`ve tested a more recent 840 EVO, and it's still performing as expected. There may have been a hardware update at some point which means that the problem is avoidable. Having said that, it may just be down to SSDs that have had more writes (usually older ones) still degrade, even with the recent firmware update.

One last chance for Samsung to get this sorted. I think they'll struggle, because they didn't get it right with their first attempt.

i think they will sort it out if enough complain, they did say they were looking into it so that's some hope

im glad i bought a pro,or id have two drives with issues, aint fired up my other pc for a few weeks so aitn had chance to test my evo,but last time i checked it was fine

Well mine is back... getting worse but not fully there yet

Have they acknowledged the problem ? If so, I'll wait. Where did you read this ?

To be honest, I haven't noticed any significant loss of performance with my own machine yet, but I know from updating a few other PCs/laptops that there was a noticeable improvement after the update. My EVO continues to lose performance almost daily.

Not sure if you saw my post but mine was purchased in Feb 14 and is not performing as well as your customers from around the same time.

If Samsung try and sweep this issue under the carpet it will be my last SSD from them.

From my contact with them last time folks they sent out advance RMA's so I think they will handle this well once they know what is happening.

Patience.

Samsung do need to train/inform their technical support department better.

I was told that the performance of my EVO "seems quite normal".

The reply should have been "we're investigating the issue". Even I know that, and I'm just a customer. :D
