Assistance - Calling all Samsung EVO owners

I did read about diskfresh, but some said performance wasn't the same after. I think I'll just leave it. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet like everyone else and get a new (non samsung) ssd down the line. Tbh I'm satisfied with the performance even if it's degraded, but it shouldn't be like this really, that's the point.

You can clone to a spare HDD/ssd then do a secure erase through Samsung magician and clone back that's all I did on my corsair ssd to restore lost performance

The alternative to cloning is to create an image of the SSD onto a spare drive, secure erase the SSD, then restore the image to the SSD.

Imaging rather than cloning doesn't erase anything on the drive you are backing up to. The only disadvantage is that you'll need a boot disc/memory stick for the disk imaging software that you are using, unless the destination drive has a bootable copy of Windows installed on it.

It restores the majority of the performance and is a lot quicker and more convenient than other methods. I used diskfresh before the official fix came out and it restored 99% of the max throughput. FWIW no other samsung models should be effected.

Just found this in the v1.1 pdf

Samsung Performance Restoration v.1.1 does not work if users did performance restoration through v.1.0
That probably explains why you can't rerun the restoration. If you used v1.0 you'll need to rerun v1.0.

According to the v1.1 changelog the only improvements are

1. GUI (Progress bar) improved
2. Improved compatibility of detecting drives with some PC systems
So there should be no difference in terms of restoring perf between v1.0 and v1.1.

v1.0 is still on samsungs server here if anyone want's it.

I literally bought another SSD of the same size (needed more space anyhow) cloned the drive using acronis (the CD boots) booted onto the cloned copy to secure erase the Samsung SSD (bare in mind that it will go into a locked state temporarily requiring removal of the power lead while it is turned on) then copied the cloned drive back to the original and continued as is.

For some reason since doing that my Evo "seems" to be working back to normal without any real degradation so far, after the performance restoration tool I was still seeing some performance issues/degradation. I don't think cloning/secure erase alone will fix it as I used some 3rd party software to "refresh" every cell before they released that and it did little more than temporarily fix it and didn't do anything for some of the worst locations due to the firmware not properly handling "failing" blocks.

Since the firmware update/restoration, I`ve secured erased and restore twice. Each time I do that the performance looks fine, but I see a drop in performance after a few weeks. The last time I erased/restored was at the end of December. The performance graph is looking quite bad now.

Waiting for news from Samsung.

That's why it's pointless going through the rigmarole of imaging, just use the easyest method to rewrite the data. The outcome is the same.

Not quite "pointless" to go through imaging.

Imaging, rather than using the restoration tool, has the advantage that you end up with a complete backup of your SSD. Should you lose a file, a folder, or even have a complete SSD failure, you have a backup.

The actual time taken to image and restore is not much longer than the time taken for the restoration tool to do it's job, if I remember correctly.

Still, what's really required is for Samsung to fix the problem properly.

Talking of the retoration tool, am I the only one that finds that it fails about a third of the way through step 3 ? Virtually all the machines I`ve updated have done this. I have to click the "start" button again to get the process to finish.

Pointless as in restoring performance, you know, when there are much faster means, like diskfresh :)

Never had it fail, but I've only ran it twice, on the same machine on the same drive.

I shall be posting back my results again on Sunday as then it would be another week gone since I have done a secure erase on both my evos and installed windows 10

Yes, there are faster means of restoring performance. Even if there was a way of restoring performance in one minute, I wouldn't use it at the moment. Re-writing the data on the drive is only masking the real problem, and wearing it out slightly.

I'm waiting for Samsung's answer.

I have 2 840 evos so would be interesting to see what Samsung say about it or what they plan on doing to fix the problems

I have just one (but have installed dozens for other people).

I'd like Samsung to sort the problem, then I might start buying and recommending them again. I think it's Crucial for their reputation. :D

I like the drives, one I have had is since June 2014 and one I got for what I thought was a good price in Jan.

I think the issues are not too obvious for me as I am using the sata 2 ports as my sata 3 ones are shocking on my motherboard.

I have kept the results from first day of installing windows 10 to one week later and I will do 2 weeks on Sunday to see if the speeds are any better.

both have been secure erased and the restoration tool ran on them

Seems to take 4 - 6 weeks before there's a noticeable drop in performance.

It may depend on how "bad" your drive is.

Some drive seem to be affected more than others. I`ve tested one drive that still seems fine after 3 months of use.

yeah, that's why im testing mine on a weekly basis on the same day to see when and if the issues start to happen.

so far they both seem ok but only time will tell.

has anyone had anything back from Samsung about the issue?

I`ve sent a couple of emails. They asked for system info and benchmark results.

Hopefully they'll acknowledge that there is a problem soon.

did you contact Samsung first or did you just give them a e mail about the issue?

I am currently coming up to two weeks since I have done a secure erase so will see if this has made any difference on sunday and then I will do the same the following week to monitor
