Assistance - Calling all Samsung EVO owners

Well PCPER just posted a statement from Samsung.

Made my blood boil slightly because it made total light of the original problem and on going issues!

Hey ho at least they have once again acknowledged an issue.

To be honest though this being the 2nd strike I am beginning to think about options for upgrade.

Perhaps OCuk would consider something similar to the NVidia situation by offering refunds to allow purchase of a more reliable drive.

I don't think I am quite at that stage but getting there slowly.

"In October, Samsung released a tool to address a slowdown in 840 EVO Sequential Read speeds reported by a small number of users after not using their drive for an extended period of time. This tool effectively and immediately returned the drive’s performance to normal levels. We understand that some users are experiencing the slowdown again. While we continue to look into the issue, Samsung will release an updated version of the Samsung SSD Magician software in March that will include a performance restoration tool."

Rubbish explanation, and rubbish solution.

So basically. Keep using our own Disk Fresh tool which will only be a temp fix. ********!

Can OcUK be of any help in this matter?

Just contacted The Rainforest regarding a 840 EVO I purchased about a year ago.

Drive not reading at full speed any more & Samsung have not resolved the issue even given several months, return for full refund authorised.

I tested my evo again yesterday to see how it was going, result was a perfect line at max speed, so the restoration fix seems to be working ok for me. I ran the performance fix as soon as it came out so it has had time to degrade again if it was going to.

Got mine from Amazon aswell, will probably return for a refund and get an 850 EVO. Can't be bothered to wait for samsung, sounds like their just updating the software to allow multiple runs of the perf restoration. Which could mean a permanent fix is way off or their hoping people will just put up with it.

My Intel 730 SSD is working fine so far. Not at all impressed by the way Samsung have been dealing with this issue, I doubt I will be buying their SSD's again.

That's good to hear, will give Samsung one more chance to fix this issue other wise it will be going back, *** CS is so good.

I can also confirm that I have read performance issues with Samsung 840 EVO 250GB - I have ran the restoration program before and this worked without secure erase for a few weeks at least - months later I had the same issue and I RE-INSTALLED the restoration program and ran it again and it worked. I'm not sure if the secure erase permanently fixes the problem but I don't have the means to do it right now anyway.

Clearly Samsung have got a problem with there SSD range and it seems that it can't be resolved easily with a update. Running the restoration program now and then is okay but it's unlikely I will buy another if there are other similar products out there with a similar price - thats not good news for Sammy as the word is spreading now and they seem to be doing nothing about it.

secure erase don't cure it either,it degrades again after a few months

personally I think the restoration software that Samsung threw out is just a glorified secure erase program

poor show from samsung

The 'not using their drive for an extended period of time' is not quite correct as my PC runs 24/7 so it's always in use, I guess they mean data has been on the drive for a long period - which means anyone who doesn't reinstall their O/S for a while will suffer problems.

The restoration software simply read the data off the drive and wrote it back again (as far as I know). It "refreshed" the data in the memory to bring back the performance. Some of us had done this prior to the update being available, and it did restore performance to where it should be. The firmware update was supposed to prevent future loss of performance, but that appears to have failed to properly fix the problem.

I don't think you should be mentioning competitors to OCUK on this forum.

However, the one you mentioned seems to offer excellent customer service.

Why would anyone buy another Samsung SSD to replace a flawed Samsung SSD ?

Vote with your money !

i got my second evo from a local store ending in world so i might take mine back and see if i can get a refund for it, my first evo is about 8 months old and brought from scam so doubt they will do anything as they refused to help with the 970 issues for ages

Why will they give you a refund if is working?

They should give you a refund as it is not working as intended and just point them to the Samsung statement.

There is no argument here. The fact that Samsung are having to "fix" it again says it is not working as intended.

I also think that this is something that is likely never to be fully fixed given that it has taken a huge company two attempts to fix it. They'll start to resort to brute force workarounds which is what they are doing. Allowing you to run the restoration tool over and over again is a workaround not a fix.

Please not that the problem will effect anyone that uses this drive with static data. It has noting to do with not using a drive at all for any length of time. It is to do with data being written then left for months. Anyone that has their OS on their drive will be in this situation as many OS files do not get re-written. Neither do games that you install. So game load times will drift as well.

The restoration tool as already explained reads the files and then re-writes the file to the nand cells thus re-freshing the data.

What people never seemed bothered about but I certainly am is that in using your restoration tool you are wearing out the NAND. TLC has vastly limited write cycles than MLC. So every time you use the workaround provided by Samsung you are adding wear to your drive thus reducing it's life span. So not only can they not fix the drive they are suggesting you should decrease the life span of your drive using their tool to workaround the issue.

Not exactly the best idea really is it. I suspect though no one has said such that the more full your drive is the more you wear it when you run the restoration tool. e.g if your drive has 250GB of data on it. Running the tool will re-write 250GB of data. 500GB of data re-writes 500GB. Stands to reason.

So at the moment I am not prepared to add to my drive wear just because Samsung can't fix the problem.

So back to refunds - It has a known performance degradation bug they tried to fix and haven't yet. The work around is to add extra wear to your drive thus reducing it's life span (however small). Yeah... not fit for purpose. Refund.

I think I'll be enquiring at OCuk kings of customer service if they will offer full refunds and both my drives will go back.

Good explanation of the issue.

Samsung have stated that they are looking into the issue. I also think they'll struggle to properly solve the problem.

Regarding returning the drives (if the retailer agrees), does secure erasing the drive effectively remove all data? Is that the best method or is there another program that can be used?
