I only use this SSD for games though so things hardly ever get installed etc. hence why mine is still pretty good.

I also got mine from amazon so in the near future, I will return it for a refund. Definitely not buying another Samsung SSD, will stick with Crucial or Intel.

your ok with Samsung aslong as you buy the pro models

as of now I wouldn't touch the evo's 840 or 850 for that matter

In other words, the initial fix isn’t as much as a fix as it was originally thought. Samsung’s still researching a more permanent solution, but releasing an update to (presumably, hopefully) kickstart the slow data on affected SSDs in the meantime. It’s better than nothing, I guess, but here’s hoping Samsung solves this puzzle sooner rather than later.

not a full fix then

It will be interesting to see how they actually fix the problem, if and when they do?

I've dropped a note for bailey on the CS forum to see if they will accept returns for refund so I'll keep you all updated. I have mentioned others will want to know.

Has any info been released as to why only a handful of drives seem to be still affected? What is making some 840 evo's different to others?

im guessing they have improved either the nand production or the controller on the later evo's? idk

Customer service have said they will deal with this on a case by case basis As they have not been told by their supplier to accept returns. Intesresting comment i suppose which is fair enough but there is no denying there are issues with the drives.

Yes I'm in a difficult position due to my drives already being replaced by samsung but obviously they still have the issue as it is with the model. I've asked them to refund none the less as the model is defective. See what they say. Difficult situation for them and me to be honest but they have been very reasonable.

here are my drives after 3 weeks of a secure erase and installing windows 10

SSD old - June 2014

I have kept all of my results from the 1st of Feb

My drive is behaving strangely. A couple of weeks ago I saw that this thread had been resurrected and I tested my drive and had dips into the 300s again, so I thought my drive was affected even though the restoration tool had been run.

However, I've just run it again and got this.

Very little has changed on this drive in the last couple of weeks as it contains my OS and several games that I haven't had time to play much of late.

Only 2 things that I have changed are;

Installed latest Intel Rapid Storage Drivers
Optimised my OS using the settings in Samsung magician

It is probably a coincidence though, but I can't think of anything else that has changed

Why would anyone buy another Samsung SSD to replace a flawed Samsung SSD ?

Vote with your money !
Returning for a full refund is not voting with my feet?

Don't get me wrong if I couldn't either get a permanent fix or a full refund I would be far less likely to ever touch a samsung drive again. I can understand people feeling a bit jittery about the EVO range after this but if you understand the 840 issue and the fundimental differences of the NAND in the 850 EVO it's not likely to suffer the same fate.

...SNIP...
Yor bob on, one thing I would say though is while the 840 TLC has less write cycles than MLC (850 TLC has a lot more than the 840 due to the NAND changes) running the tool a few times a year isn't going to significantly impact the available cycles. They often keep going way past the rated cycles aswell.

I hope those wanting a refund are able to get them and that samsung is able to come up with a permanent fix, my confidence is waning on the latter but we don't know what's going on behind the scenes.

That was reported elsewhere aswell but there is an interesting stetement in that one.
One upside: These performance issues have been isolated to the Samsung 840 EVO alone. The newer Samsung 850 Pro and 850 EVO SSDs, which use bleeding-edge vertical NAND technology, aren’t affected.
That's what I thought aswell, they don't make it clear if that's also their opinion or if it's what samsung are telling them.
