Assistance - Calling all Samsung EVO owners

I recently posted this, from an email that I had from Samsung.

thank you for your email.
In March Samsung will release a new Magician version and it will be possible to run the new firmware for the 840 EVO which should solve the performance issue.
Please apply the firmware as soon as the Magician will be released and if the issue won't be solved, please contact us again and we will check if it is possible to create a RMA for you.

That implies that they are trying to provide a permanent fix.

Although the last sentence might be a clue to what's really going to happen.
I hope that's correct and the support representative isn't mistaken.

I ran the update back when it came out.... noticed the other day a performance drop of, did a test and was getting ~30mb... ouch. Ran the performance restore tool again and it's back up to 300mb. Am I going to have to run it every few months? :-\

The PROs are spot on aren't they, I got two and love the sustained speed between them. These are 4 months old and as expected not a sniff of a slowdown.

We thought the 840 EVO were spot on, until a month or two later.

Maybe the 850 EVO's take a little longer. ;)

JOKE !

A previous support rep sent me an email explaining "According to your screenshots, the performance of the SSD seems quite normal."

So yes, supports reps can be mistaken.
Exactly

There is hope still though they may have had a breakthrough, or they may keep us hanging for months.

You have a good point there, think I'll wait a few years before buying any 850 EVOs ;)

Well I'm about to test Samsung's RMA process, as I had just had my first "proper" 840 EVO failure.

Longish story, but when I tried to secure erase it (prior to re-installing Windows) via a USB memory stick, it tells me that the drive is password protected. I know that the drive isn't password protected, because I'd already had it working in my PC after removing it from the laptop it was in. I successfully carried out the Firmware/Performance update, tested it back in the laptop (it was still working), tried to secure erase from Windows (wouldn't work, then suggested the USB memory stick method). Now it's not being recognised in Windows, and won't secure erase due to the password (which I never set).

I`ve just spoken to Samsung about this problem, and they're going to get it picked up and sorted (good service).

I asked the chap on the phone about the performance issue. He confirmed that by the end of the month there should be a new version of Magician which will include a firmware update that they hope will cure the problem, and I quote "or Samsung will have a problem".

It sounds promising.

It's not my SSD, it's one I installed in a customer's laptop back in 2013, so it's about 18 months old.

I think it didn't like being powered off/on for the secure erase. It's certainly unusable now. First time I`ve had one fail on me.

ahhh ok, I find that after doing a secure erase I had to leave my SSD disconnected from the power and sata cable for about 20 mins or so as it wouldn't let me install windows on to it.

this was the case with both my SSDs

I`ve never had a problem with secure erasing before, although I haven't done it very often, maybe about 10 times. Each time it's worked fine and I`ve been able to install Windows on the SSD straight afterwards.

I have only used it a few times, start of feb I ran the restoration tool on both my SSDs and then done a secure erase

then got errors about not being able to copy over the files to the drive but had also red the ssd can go in to a freeze state after a secure erase so left them both disconnected from power and sata for a good few hours while I did other things, reconnected and all was ok again.

lets hope their RMA route is quick and simple and that you don't get a replacement (if its a 840 evo) with the same isue

It's being picked up on Monday. I was told that it would take about a week for the replacement to arrive.

I doubt if the problem will happen again, I think this was just a random fault. Bound to happen at some point, and I`ve not read anywhere else about this being a widespread issue.

If Samsung turn this faulty drive around quickly, and they get the slowdown sorted with the new firmware, it'll restore my faith in them. If the next firmware update fails to fix all the slowing 840 EVOs, and they offer a replacement (either a "good" 840 or an 850), then that might make me switch back to buying Samsung SSDs in the future. For the time being, I'm installing Crucial MX100s.

I don't blame you, cant have people having issues with a slow SSDs which there is nothing you can do about it

one of my SSD's has gone back and I am tempted to take back my other evo to where I brought it from and get a 850 evo instead

I don't think now is the time to do anything with an 840 EVO. Only a week or two before we should get an update. Then it's a case a waiting a few weeks (or even months) to see if the issue is truly sorted.

I now think Samsung will come good on this, one way or the other.
