Assistance - Calling all Samsung EVO owners

Just noticed this thread, so this affects the non EVO version of the 840 as well? I grabbed one back in Black Friday in November and there's not been much data transferring with it, mostly used as a Steam/Origin drive as well as a few less used programs.

Did a benchmark with HD Tune and it seems to be on a steady 400MB/s.

This is the problem, some users have the issue some do not. I am in the same boat 4 Evo`s over the last year or so and no problems with any of them and at least one with files that have not been used for over six months. I would not be surprised if it is a issue with the memory chip quality.

well one of my SSDs (brought in June 2014) is being sent back for a RMA.

having issues with it randomly disconnecting and then not showing up till the sata cable was re seated.

goes back tomorrow and then see if they are going to replace it or give me a refund

Weekly update. Drive really feeling sluggish now!

850pros affected?
Absolutely not. It uses 40nm MLC V-NAND, only 19nm TLC is effected and the 840 EVO is the only drive that uses 19nm TLC.

The 850 EVO also uses 40nm TLC V-NAND so is also unlikely to be effected by this specific bug that plagues the 840 EVOs. The 850 EVO hasn't been out long though so it's too early to say if it is free from ANY major issues, the usual early adoptor caution should be exercised but it certainly shouldn't suffer from the same bug that the 840 EVO does.

My 840 Evo 1TB degraded 3 months even after the so called fix. I got fed up and replaced it with a 850 Pro 1TB. So far after 5 months of 24/7 use the performance is still perfect.

The drive has always been around 40% full.

glad its not effecting their new SSDs, Samsung are meant to be releasing a new version of the magician software and firmware for the drive this month to fix the 840s

I still do not think this is a bug. I would say it is more of a problem with quality issue of the memory chips being used.

I'm inclined to agree.

Some Evos seem to have been properly fixed (as far as we know) by the last firmware update. Some haven't (mine, for example). Maybe Samsung can tweak the firmware a little more to sort out the issues with the drives that weren't fixed. Maybe they won't. If they don't, I expect them to offer a refund or exchange for users with SSDs that continue to lose performance.

It said on an announcement few pages back

I recently posted this, from an email that I had from Samsung.

thank you for your email.
In March Samsung will release a new Magician version and it will be possible to run the new firmware for the 840 EVO which should solve the performance issue.
Please apply the firmware as soon as the Magician will be released and if the issue won't be solved, please contact us again and we will check if it is possible to create a RMA for you.

That implies that they are trying to provide a permanent fix.

Although the last sentence might be a clue to what's really going to happen.

if they do a RMA for the drive are they going to replace it with another 840 evo as you may run in to the same issues again

I don't know.

Maybe they have identified the issue with the NAND memory (assuming that is the cause of the problem), and will send out "good" 840 EVOs to replace the bad ones.

Maybe they will swap faulty 840 EVOs for 850 EVos.

Maybe they will fix the issue properly with another firmware update.

Maybe the won't fix the issue properly, and ignore the complaints of paying customers.

All I know is that I don't want or expect to be doing monthly refreshes on my SSD to maintain it's performance. I didn't expect to have to do that when I bought it, and I don't think I should be expected to do it from now on.

I would have thought they would replace it with a 850 to keep the customers happy but then again its down to Samsung to decide what they do if the March fix still doesn't solve the problems.

one of my Evos is going back today due to it being faulty and not this issue, I still got another for my OS so will see how it holds out

The PROs are spot on aren't they, I got two and love the sustained speed between them. These are 4 months old and as expected not a sniff of a slowdown.
