tell me about it, I returned my 970 and then the issue with these SSDs lol.

Samsung are going to be releasing a new version of the magician software in March some time to help with the issue

Quite a drop in performance since my last test 7 days ago. Drive now starting to feel slower in day to day usage too.

That's since the beginning of the year, so about 12 weeks.

It started to look pretty bad after 4 weeks.

It's starting to affect the performance of my PC (boot up takes noticeably longer and I detect a slight "lag" in launching some apps and games).

When I first read about this issue and tested my Evo it was even worse. I'd put loss of performance down to my Windows install "getting old". After carrying out a few secure erase/restores and running the Samsung update/restoration toll, I get the performance back for a while, but I do now notice the gradual loss of real word performance. It's not a massive slow down, but it is there.

Maybe time to contact OCUK about this.

I agree that you shouldn't have to, but until Samsung release a fix I will.

I hope there is an "until" (in the near future).

They've had one crack at solving the problem, which seems to have failed.

A monthly re-writing of data is not a proper fix, and isn't something we expected to have to do when we bought these SSDs.

I hope I'm wrong, but I think there could well be a fundamental issue with the hardware design.

As far as I know Samsung will have a new fix this Month sometime, I have heard it will be available in the next Magician software?

I agree with what you are saying though. Why didn't the first fix cure it?

Take a look at this article:

"While we continue to look into the issue, Samsung will release an updated version of the Samsung SSD Magician software in March that will include a performance restoration tool."

Sounds to me like they're adding a data re-write facility into SSD Magician that will need to be run every so often to restore full performance. In the meantime they're saying that they are looking into the issue (for a "proper" solution).

Although it isn't really a major problem, re-writing the data on an SSD reduces it's lifespan. It can also take a fair amount of time to do, depending on the amount of data stored on the SSD.

This isn't what I expected when I bought this SSD.

I probably won't buy a Samsung SSD again. Take a look at my thread here:

This sounds promising......

thank you for your email.
In March Samsung will release a new Magician version and it will be possible to run the new firmware for the 840 EVO which should solve the performance issue.
Please apply the firmware as soon as the Magician will be released and if the issue won't be solved, please contact us again and we will check if it is possible to create a RMA for you.

Firmware ! :)

looking good indeed, so far I thought it was just going to be a new version of the magician software being released and not a new firmware as well so should be interesting to see what happens.

If it is firmware, not just a data refresh facility, and it fixes problem properly, then my faith in Samsung (and my Evo's performance !) will be restored.
