ASUS 42" ROG Swift PG42UQ

Yeah i have noticed the manual is all kinds of wrong - says USB on top for flashing firmware when its the USB B and HDMI 2.1 are listed on the side when they are on the bottom.

In his latest video on the updated aw34 from Alienware, Linus announced that his pg42uq has burn in after 1 month of use. He didn't say what settings he uses, but he has a history of burning in his OLEDs screens. He briefly showed the burn in and it looks like it's the windows desktop background image that is burned in, so he likely leaves the screen idling on desktop

I don’t recall him saying burn in, I thought he said image retention.

Some people use them interchangeably but I would have thought Linus would know the difference

It looks like his usual thing... he is a heavy user of snap zones on his 4K displays ie his display is divided into 4 quadrants, each quadrant has some app maximized within the zone. I think the main takeaway I am coming away with is that you can use an OLED for productivity but its not going to be ideal or problem free UNLESS you are willing to invest effort and possibly changing your useage patterns. The latter could be a deal breaker for some people when it comes to their work habits.

I am still going to give the 42 OLED a chance I think (8 hours a day productivity then several hours at night for leisure) but I am going into it not without trepidation...

edit: and i should add my interest/consideration of the Samsung Neo G8 is slowly climbing...

thats key you need to change your usage OLED needs TLC you cant just use it however you want and Linus should know this

ive totally changed the way i use my desktop with the oled and nearly 2 months in no signs of any issues

desktop icons hidden, 3rd party dock that autohides, taskbar autohide wallpaper cycling, never snapping windows, dark mode everything if possible turning off the display with the remote when leaving it idle for a while etc

not ideal but thats the price we need to pay if we want all the benefits of oled i dont mind those extra steps if it means i never have to look at grey blacks or ips glow again

when the hell are Asus releasing the new firmware they said mid nov... i downgraded to v028 because of the bugs in v3x
v28 not that great either

Finally got my Pg42uq, it came with firmware v025.

The picture quality is really beautiful and I really like the mate screen coating for my dev work during daytime. At first I thought 42’ might be too large, but this feels good to be able to sit further back.

Games I tried were WoW, Spider-Man Miles Moralis, Tetris Effect, Ghostwire and Cult of the Lamb. Especially WoW, Tetris Effect and Ghostwire wowed me! :)

One problem I had so far:
While playing Tetris Effect, WoW and CotL a whitish rectangular shape would pop up randomly for a fraction of a second. It is slightly distracting, but since it it doesn’t happen often I quickly forget about it again.

This would not happen often, but randomly only every other few minutes. Did not happen at all while using the desktop normally.

Any ideas on this one?

I will try to film it to get a closer look what that is….

Using DP to my RTX2080 Ti, original cable.
Is the original DP cable any good?

I might reinstall Windows 11 soon too.
Cheers :)

For anyone having issued with G-Sync not being active. The latest NVIDIA driver 526.98 now includes certification for G-Sync to work correctly. I had issues with G-Sync being active on the monitor and through the drivers but not actually working.
The latest drivers have now resolved this.

On a side note, ARMS warriors are getting a huge nerf on release.
Haha, not playing WoW for any of that anymore. That takes just too much time. :p

I uninstalled the Asus Display Driver and it has been working fine again without the image corruption. Are you guys using the Display Driver?

Still no new firmware, so much for mid november.
Also in nvidia settings bumping the digital vibrance setting to 60-70 really helps the washed out hdr in window sdr content. Not sure if it's a good idea to use, but everything seems much nicer.

OK one week of testing completed. With 4k 10bit 60Hz on normal desktop use including video playback and 120Hz when gaming and I have not experienced my issue even once. I am quite certain it is an issue with DSC and hardware accelerated video playback (possibly with HDCP?). Not 100% sure if the problem is the display or GPU/drivers. My previous display did not support DSC so I cannot compare to that.

On Monday I will switch back to running everything on 120Hz and see how long does it take for the issue to manifest itself the first time.

Based on some of the comments in this thread, I ordered new cables (both DP and HDMI) and ditched the ones shipping with the display. Certified HDMI 2.1, reputable manufacturers. I started running the display with the "normal" settings, 4k 10bit 120Hz, but ran into the "blue vertical lines on grey" issue shortly after. I was disappointed of course and turned on the overclocking and 138Hz for the first time, just to see if it makes a difference. *knock on wood* I have not had any issues since with heavy / active use during the past days.

Very happy with the screen despite it requiring a little tuning. I have had similar experiences with other products as well.

I have my previous display next to the PG42UQ and I cannot understand how I managed to live with the horrible trailing/ghosting and grey blacks.

As above but with some details.

Version V033 2022/11/28
1.Optimized firmware update tool.
2.Optimizing ConsoleHDR.
3.Improve the power indicator issue.

Will give it a try tomorrow.

Anyone know what the power indicator issue is? Mine is either a dim ish orange when standby or a bright red when on.
