Asus MAXIMUS IV EXTREME

so tim how u enjoying your new board any teething problems with the b3

Thx for asking, hlennie.

GPU's, optical drive, cooler, HDD, and maybe even the SSD, are due in today, so I haven't yet started.

I'm very hesitant about this type of thing (building a system), procrastinate a lot, and read everything to death before doing it. I follow instructions and check and recheck.

(I finally got over that "Close cover before striking," thing when I was about 30. LOL )

I did get the 3D, 120Hz, 23" Asus display yesterday. I got some coffee after dinner, sat down last night in a comfy chair with a good reading lamp to tackle the 6mm thick book with a proper read-through. A few minutes into reading I learned only 5 pages were in English. LOL The rest of the pages are other languages. (I think they missed Pig Latin and Australian.) Page 3 of the English instructions, #1., end of the text reads, "Exit the OSD menu...," but they never said what OSD was. WTF? I googled OSD today and found it was most likely On Screen Display. Duh.

What the interwebs and computers really need are more acronyms.

Well Tim u make sure u post your findings once u get it all up and running instructions never followed them me self they so long winded when a few brief instructions would have done

oh and more pics will be nice im still waiting for my board to get in stock think its going to be a end of the month job

I'm on back order too so I look forward to your thoughts on the board. One thing I am interested in is that little fan under the logo. I'm hoping that only fires up when the NF200 is used. Hate screamy little fans. Reminds me of my Delta days.

OK, guys, to keep your appetite whet, here's a good MIVE video review and it gets into the PCI lanes we've been discussing. At the end of it the reviewer does benchmarks and shows results with 2-way SLI graphics cards in slots 1 & 4 (as Asus suggests), and in 3 & 5, with another type of card in slot 1 to enable the NF200 and true x16 on both graphics cards. The results don't show much difference either way -- with one way slightly edging out the other differently on various different games and tests.

You should get a long list of MIVE video unboxings, tests, etc., by clicking here.

The Asgard, is that a fan? I know it lights from looking at this video.

Hi Tim,

A bit off-topic, but I'd be interested on your thoughts on the 3D, 120Hz, 23" Asus display you mentioned when you power it up and have a go. Is it the VG236H?

When I start my build (after I finish decorating the study/game room/mancave) I was thinking about going down the nVidia 3D Vision Surround road.

I was planning to get 3 x LG W2363D because it got a good review on 3dvision-blog, but I'm worried that the bezel will be hard to work with (in a surround setup) because of the tube thingy on the bottom. Does the VG236H have a thin bezel? How much did you pay for it?

Thanks,
KB.

KingBob,

The number on the Asus box says VG236. The Model Number on the back of the display says VG236. The Version Number on the back of the display says VG236HE. See their spec page here. Asus doesn't show a VG236H as a product. So, when I was trying to figure out what was what, basically looking at the Newegg and Amazon sites, I figured out that the VG236H had the nVidia 3D glasses and emitter with it and is called a bundle, and the VG236HE didn't have them included. I ordered the nVidia glasses kit separately.

As best I can measure it with a ruler (should I break out my dial caliper? LOL), the side bezels are 17mm. FWIW, that is the same width bezel I have on my two, 22" wide Samsung displays, and they don't get in the way or bother me at all.

I too noticed the good, more professional reviews for the LG. I then checked the Newegg and Amazon consumer reviews.

LG W2363D:
• Newegg: 16 reviews, 10 five egg, 4 four egg, 1 three egg, 1 one egg.
• Amazon: 5 reviews, 1 five stars, 1 four stars, 2 three stars, 1 two stars.
• Total: 21 reviews, 11 at 5, 5 at 4, 3 at 3, 1 at 2, 1 at 1.
• Percent: 52% at 5, 24% at 4, 14% at 3, 5% at 2 and 1.

Asus VG236HE:
• Newegg: 20 reviews, 15 five egg, 3 four egg, 1 three egg, 1 one egg.
• Amazon: 5 reviews, 4 five stars, 1 four stars.
• Total: 25 reviews, 19 at 5, 4 at 4, 1 at 3, 1 at 1.
• Percent: 76% at 5, 16% at 4, 4% at 3 and 1.

I don't know that it is all that accurate a way to rate them, but that is what I did. I then read most low egg/star reviews to see what the problem was, and try to guess if the reason for the low rating was the display's fault, or if the writer was a putz. I ended up deducing that the consumer reviews favored the Asus display. Since you mentioned it, I now recall reading about the "tube" at the bottom of the LG.

I paid $341.96 US for it at Amazon with free shipping.

Try to remind me to give you my display impressions when you notice that I am up and running with my build. I'll likely forget otherwise.

I hope this helps!

Tim

P.S. I love the way the one 4-star consumer review (the other four are 5-star), about the VG236HE here at this site complains about there being no USB ports on the display.

I thought it was but I'm hoping it isn't. I'm hoping you can tell me?

On previous board that used NF200 there always seemed to be a fan associated with the chip because it tended to run hot.

I can't tell, Asgard. There are the white and red wires (see here) coming out from under it and going to the mobo, but if it is a fan it just exhausts out from under the Southbridge heatsink, and not out the back of the board or anything.

Again, remind me to check it when you notice I'm starting to get it put together.

Thx!

Tim

Asgard i might have been mistaken to it being a fan i thought it was at first but with the only 2 wires it just must be an led

know what u mean about those small fans they so loud i had one on my x58 bearings went and i could hear it over every other fan in my case

No fan there i had a good look at mine and dont worry the heatsink is not that warm at all,not even close to my old EVGA 4 way board so that a good thing in my book.
