Asus P5Q-E (P45) Motherboard Review

Would you recommend getting a P45 instead of a X38, as they are about the same price now.

Struggling to see the diff between the pro, deluxe and prem editions of the asus p5q boards except for the price :(

Matthew

not seen anything about a premium p5q but the main differences between the pro and deluxe is the 8/16 phase, differences in the bios, different heat pipes/heat sinks, different expansion slots [deluxe has a third pcie x16 slot running at x4 if i remember rightly on pcie 1 - so half the bandwidth of pcie 2]

basically the p5q-e is a deluxe board at the same price as the pro board but without the 16 phase that the deluxe has.

thanks, understood
P45 also doesn't have official support for 1600FSB, I think that's right. But a moot point, it will do it anyway

EDIT: Just to confuse things, the X38 is essentially the same as the X48 but the X48 is a higher grade (better manufactured or cherry picked) component chip. As far as I understand it the X38 has exactly the same features as any of the X48 boards as such, but overclocks may be better with the X48 (slightly) and not the 'may'. Also, the X48 "officially" support the 1600mhz fsb, which I don't think the X38 did. Because the X48 chips are better they run cooler. The X38 is noted to run hotter, perhaps too hot really.

They may use the same but differently binned chip, but the boards seem to be different. Many many X38 boards have a 440mhz FSB wall with the 45nm quads, but the X48 boards are hitting 490-500mhz. I sold my ASUS Maximus Formula SE X38 after 2 weeks and went back to a Abit IP35-Pro for this very reason.

I ran 3870x2 x2 and noticed very little difference between PCIe 16x and PCIe 8x. 21k in 3d06;)

great review w3bbo, in your opinion would you say the additional bandwidth of x38/48 [2x 16 pcie] isn't really evident over the 2x 8 pcie corssfire setup on a p45? any insight would be great cos i'm wondering whether to go p45 over the x38

Didn't know that... thanks for the good info :)

I noticed very little, if any difference between PCIe 8x to PCIe 16x. PCIe 16x isn't fully saturated so 8x is ample imo at least with the 3870x2's in crossfire. 21k in 3d06 is nothing to be sniffed at and seems inline with current x38/x48 boards so no throttling I could find.

What impressed me most is the high FSB's these boards were reaching with minimal effort or cooling.

Ouch. Didn't spot that before I ordered. Whilst 8-phase will suffice, I may change my P5Q-E order...

By all accounts 16 phase power is no better than 8 phase... though I'm still drawn to the dlx over the E :D

Maximum I want to spend is about £100, so stuck in the X38 EOL offers, lesser P45 board, or get a p35 for the moment for much less than £100.

hmm...

For some reason tempted to get a p5q (not sure what model though) board, although since I'll likely have to sell my x-fi fps to get one, the msi is also worth thinking about as it has x-fi, but not to confident in the msi bios's :(

Matthew

i'd get a lower p45 mate... they're far more fufutre proof than the p5k's .. they've got pcie 2.0.. and a darn nice fsb i'm getting ne because they seem far more future proof than the other boards...

True. Will keep an eye open and see how much I have after I have sold some bits :) (as I actually like my x-fi and don't really want to sell it lol).

Keep the P45 reviews coming, it does look like a nice chipset :)

Just received my P5Q Deluxe two days early.

Gotta swap boards between 2 systems now, so I'll report back later :)

Very good, mine is being shipped today too, to replace my P5N-E SLI. It may be a while before I can do the swap though. And then I'll have the argument with MS about my OEM copy of Vista....

Tuvoc just tell them you had a mobo failure it has always worked for me my oem copy of xp was on it's 5th system by the time i went over to vista :).

Thanks, yes, and I'll tell them that the supplier no longer recommended that motherboard and no longer stocked it ;)

Right, whichever gimp designed the SATA sockets on this thing needs taken out the back and shot.

But this Express Gate thing's pretty cool.
