Asus P5Q-E (P45) Motherboard Review

Hoping someone can help me out here please.

I should be getting my new Asus P5Q-E board and a Q9950 as well today.

First should i update my bios with the latest one?

Second questions am i best to use the latest drivers to install things and not use the disk thats supplied?

Hoping to clock this chip up a bit once i have things set up and windows installed.
So any advice there would be great too.

Thank you.

Good find. haven't been in that thread for ages.

Taken at 412x7 with a Q6600

The lowest setting seems to have been fixed, but Auto is still way off the mark. Memory voltage seems to have gotten a little worse tho.

So what is the current suggestion then for voltage settings ? Except for NB perhaps (I have 8GB) I can just run at lowest settings ? I run FSB 266 at 11 = 2.93 on my QX6700, everything currently on auto except VDIMM

The Lowest manual voltages that will get the Job done ;)

simply, avoid Auto and don't worry about using 2 steps up from the lowest setting ! + use latest bios

Set them all to minimum, and got a machine that wouldn't boot
I'm happy to leave on auto except for VDIMM and CPU - those figures above are at a very high FSB, I haven't seen any figures at more "normal" FSB. I would hazard a guess that at lower FSB, auto settings would not overvolt substantially.

Did you up your NB voltage for running 4 sticks?

And 417mhz isn't really high FSB. The board should be able to do that with minimal chipset voltage adjustment.

just upgraded to BIOS 1306 before I started to play with the manual voltage settings
Trick as usual to be safe is to change one at a time...

Currently on bios 0803. I know theres newer versions on the go, but ive had no problems on 0803 so far. Had my q6600 @3.0ghz, 3.4 and 3.6 on this bios, never had an error in prime95 on any of theese clocks, if i want to go higher i may upgrade and see how they could help:)

Hello all. I've just purchased this motherboard and Q9550.

The ram I have coming on Monday is 8Gb of OCZ (2gb x 4) OCZ2P8008GQ.

I want to run at 400fsb (or highest the ram will go but around 400fsb will make me happy). I have no idea what settings or volts to use, please can someone advise?

Thanks.

Yeah, that was sensible......I did say lowest manual setting that will get the job done :D

Set vFSB on lowest setting
set vPLL on lowest setting
set vNB on 1.14v (daren't go any lower towards the 1.10v minimum, I have 4 x 2GB sticks)

and the machine booted and ran through 5 cycles of IntelBurnTest perfectly. So all seems well, and at least I know that the auto settings aren't overvolting me excessively. Of course there are other tests of system stability, but I'd say it will be fine :)

I needed 1.12 for NB for memory stability as the the PC got hot during gaming, so I set to 1.14..thats only upping it 5% and I only have 2 sticks of memory.
If I take NB GTL off auto it will not boot, I don't know what that's all about ?

I still have some heat related stability problems but it's crashing to reboot which is not helpful !

I'm just setting my board up now had it since friday but had no time till this morning.

Can someone tell me what memory settings i should be running for my
GeIL 4GB (4x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 please?

And am i best to run 1-1 and how do i do that so i can overclock my new Q9550.

Thank you.

Use CPUZ to check but You should find memory timings on auto pick up the correct settings

I always like 1:1 but I don't know for sure if that's the absolute best, You have to play with Your setup ;)

Ok i got a problem that when i use CPU-Z core-Temp is displays my cpu as only running at 2.1183Ghz and i've clocked it up to 3Ghz. My computer shows it as runing at 3Ghz?

I've disabled speedstep in my Bios.

Put 353 FSB.

What else do i need to do please in my Bios?

Do you guys switch off your PC at the mains plug when not in use?

I normally do this, but everytime I switch the PC on after turning off at the mains it does a wierd thing, comes on for a second, then switches itself off, and then back on again at which point it contines to boot as normal.

Is this normal behaviour? Does it cause problems for the hard drives as its spinning them up for a millisecond then back off again?

Im pretty sure its normal - in any rate i have been doing it for a few months (no HDD damage yet...!). You can clear the CMOS by killing the power (see manual), and the 'soft' start, i guess, is a test/reset if an overclock has failed.
