Asus P5W DH Deluxe - doesn't support Conroe out of box?

This really is a pain for those of us who do not just happen to have a few spare lga775 processors lying around. I emailed asus about getting a new bios chip with 0701 on it. I await their response.
This is ridiculous - even the box says it supports core 2 duo....

Why not pop to a local PC shop with the board and ask if they will flash it for you :)

It ain't as easy as that. I have a full time job, a wife and kids. The nearest shop is about 20 miles away too.

I got a reply saying if i sent them the chip they would reflash it for me or i could purchase a new chip for £5, which i will probably end up doing as i dont have my motherboard yet

Edit/

They are now sending a new chip free of charge, just got another e-mail :D

Did you get asked to fill in a form with your mobo serial number on it?
I emailed Riz and he replied saying he'd send a new chip but I can't work out whether he wants the form back first, or he wants it returned with the old chip once I've swapped them. His syntax is a little confusing.

At first he asked me to fill in the form and send the chip or £5, then he just asked for my address as there had been a "misunderstanding" so am assuming he is just sending me the chip

Yep pretty easy, i've requested one too but I need my motherboard which I have ordered and should be coming tomorrow (Finger's crossed) Then i'll give my serial number to the ASUS support guy called Rizwan and he'll ship the bios to me on the same day. Woohoo. It sounds really easy to put a new bios chip in. This is what he said to me in the email about it:

"We will send you a new bios, free of cost, please remove the old bios chip it self using a tweezers or a precision screw driver, there are small holes around the bios chip which you can use to insert the tweezers and lift the bios chip out, this is a chip with a small writing sitting inside a square box, next to CMOS battery, please take this out and replace it with the new one you will receive from me."

I think I got similar emails cut and pasted into a single message. First paragraph talks about sending in the chip or purchasing a new one, then the second says he'll send me one for free, send back my old chip once I've swapped them and fill out the form so he knows my serial number. And that's the bummer, because I'd rather not buy a P5W DH deluxe until I have a replacement chip! Ssssh, don't tell him!

just got another e-mail and it looks like he wants the serial number of my motherboard before he will send the chip. Thing is my motherboard wont be coming till my Conroe comes so I wont be able to build when my conroe arrives I will have to wait for the replacement chip :(

I reckon you have 2 options.

I trust the mobo is being delivered with the chip from OCUK?

If so, phone OCUK and beg them to send it to you. (or pay the extra P&P)
I was in a similar situation to you, but what I ordered was shown as 'in stock' when I ordered it.
I ended up with 2 deliveries at no extra cost :) (had to ring OCUK to do it)

Other than that, see my post here.

I reckon the P&P option would be the cheapest.

Hmm, I don't want to buy a mobo before I get a conroe. There might be better boards out by then, and sooner or later retailers will start stocking the Asus with the new bios chip as standard. I'd much prefer one of those over one I've hacked apart with a screwdriver.

I guess it just means more waiting around then.

Removing a push fit BIOS chip is hardly hacking it apart.
I've done a few over the years, and even have the proper tool.

You can do it just as well with a couple of pieces of bent wire (paper clips are ideal) at 90 degrees.

I wouldn't recommend the above for hotflashing tho.
Easier to remove chip with everything turned off, and put dental floss beneath it. You then pull the floss and out comes the chip with less danger of a short.
Access is everything, so doing a new board on the bench is child's play.

Yeah I was just being melodramatic :p

I've heard you can damage the contacts by kak-handed removal of the bios chip. Sod's law says that's BOUND to be me.

Well I'm thinking of grabbing one of these to try alongside the Badaxe.

In preperation for buying it, I emailed Asus about getting a replacement BIOS - that was on Monday evening... this morning, said BIOS arrived in the post.

Good job Asus imho.

Strange I sent an email and it was forwarded to riz. Riz emailed me explaining how I can get a bios chip. I emailed back saying can you send me a chip and this is my address, then he sent me another couple of emails that just had our mail trail on? nothing about yes or no... I didnt fill in any questionaire though.

Wait and see I guess.

I did the same with the bios and got forwarded to Riz and he sent me back an email with form asking for the board serial number. so it looks like i have to make my mind up and either buy then get the chip or wait a while and see what the R600 chipset turns like

Does anyone know if the ASUS P5WD2-E Premium will work with conroe

Does anyone have a clue as to when the stocks Asus are supplying to retailers might have an updated bios? It can't be too long as it isn't like retailers are swimming with stock! A rough guess will suffice.

It seems to me that the first retailer to advertise the Asus board with a 701 bios guarantee would clean up nationwide. HINT HINT :D
