ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q 144hz 2560x1440 IPS G-Sync.

Was looking for some advice from you more knowledgable folks!

All the games I play are basically not what I'd call high level graphics. It's more from the competitive side.

CS:GO LEM rank
Starcraft II
League
Bit of wow with friends.

Right now I have a 60hz monitor and would love to upgrade.

It's literally for playing games on and not much else and I'll be sitting at my desk playing. I don't plug in a console or sit on the couch watching movies.

My question is what is the better choice for me, the older TN or the new IPS variant. For me higher scores are more important that graphics and colours, I play cs in 1920, my PC specs are good but again not crazy.

The main stats difference is see is 4ms vs 1ms response time but I have no way to quatify or test that difference or would I even be able to tell!?

What suits fps and Purely competitive style gaming?

Thoughts would be great! Apologies for the vagueness of the questions as I'm not too familiar with newer displays!

Thanks!

If as you say you don't care about image quality then the TN should be your choice

I really like this monitor, but I just cannot live with it anymore. The IPS glow in the bottom right corner is horrendous, I've tried to get used to it but it's incredibly distracting.
I realise from this image it looks bad at three corners and especially bad in the top right but from my use it's only really bad and noticeable in the bottom right corner where the controls are. It distorts the colours and places a silver film over that corner of the screen.

I'd just like to add that aside from this, its the perfect display. Is it possible due to this pretty massively obvious glow to have my unit switched?

I'm hearing lots of users are having this issue. Asus get your monitor sorted out.

Same silvery "film" over anything grey/black/brown on mine too at that corner, all other corners are fine. Alien Isolation is quite the annoying game to play due to that.

Yeh i realise in the picture it looks obvious in the other corners, but it is only noticeable to me in the bottom right where it's extremely irritating - and I'm usually not that picky when it comes to monitors but here it is distracting!

If they would use Polarizers and rid Glow I'd be all over IPS but sadly these panel manufacturers seem to have forgotten about em.

I thought all TFT panels used polarizers?
Who should I speak to about a replacement? Gibbo?

They do, but not usually 'A-TW polarizers' designed to reduce glow.

I'd recommend taking a picture from a few metres back from the screen and as centrally as possible. OcUK are not going to replace a monitor because it has 'IPS glow' (AHVA glow), as it's a characteristic of the panel and replacements will be the same. If you also have significant bleed then that could be another matter. Of course you can request a refund or replacement according to CCR (Consumer Contracts Regulations) for any reason, but you really need to determine whether it is an issue of 'glow' or 'bleed'.

Just to make clear my issue. What's the difference between glow or bleed?
Did you see my picture above?

I have to put my head directly infront of the corner for the silver glow to disappear. I'd call that excessive, there's glow in all four corners but the bottom right its feels really excessive.

if the glow changes when you move to view it from head on, or reduces as you move further back then it's IPS glow and a "feature" of the panel you won't be able to eliminate. maybe accentuated a little in one corner if there's some slight clouding/bleeding of the backlight

Problem being, if you send it back, you might end up with one that's worse. It's the dilemma at the minute of having an IPS with 144/gsync or no monitor at all as the Acer's were even worse.

'Glow' is a panel characteristic that does not vary significantly between individual units of the same model (aside from possible accentuation due to bleed). It is related to the natural behaviour of light within the panel and is visible from a normal viewing distance in the corners of the screen of this size. Given the ergonomically correct viewing position, that's usually in the bottom corners more noticeably.

Backlight bleed on the other hand is a uniformity issue that varies between individual units. It does not change in appearance much depending on viewing angle and is generally more localised and 'patchy' than glow. Importantly, it is all that remains visible if you take the photograph in the correct way as to eliminate the aforementioned 'glow'. That is what was suggested in my first post. It doesn't matter what you personally deem to be acceptable or not, if your issue is one of 'glow' and not 'bleed' you will be wasting your time trying to shoot for a replacement.

I've been using IPS monitors for over a decade and I've never encountered anywhere near this level of glow on any monitor ever. It's just ridiculous. No one should be told this is a 'characteristic', because it's nothing more than a cr*p panel. Shame on you AUO and shame on you OCUK for perpetuating this. You shouldn't be selling this junk. On a quality IPS panel, glow should be negligible at worst, something you may see but only if you really look for it, absolutely not a distraction or something that hinders use. A polarizer would virtually eliminate it anyway, but these panels are so bad in the first place I highly doubt that would actually make any difference in this case.

Do you actually own the monitor or are you basing this off people's photographs? It's certainly fair to say it's a panel characteristic, even if this particular panel has a more pronounced issue with it than many others. Although to be honest I have seen plenty of IPS-type panels of this size where glow is most certainly going to inhibit the experience in an obvious way and is going to bother some users just as it does here.

I've seen one up close yes. Glow in and of itself is a characteristic yes, but a mild one, and not one that people should be up in arms about and causing distraction to the level that it is with this panel. If someone coming to IPS for the first time thinks this is what ALL IPS monitors are like, that's just wrong and unhelpful. Perhaps I have been VERY fortunate over the years, but I have done a lot of work in and around graphic designers so I know lots of people who've had IPS monitors also, and have never encountered this level of glow. The problem with this panel is that it's a pronounced issue to a ridiculous and unacceptable extent at any price point, never mind the premium one this comes with.

Agreed, it certainly seems to be relatively obtrusive on these monitors. I feel the issue is exaggerated by many of the photographs people take of the monitor, but don't feel the general reaction to the issue is an over-reaction. It's clear that it is something that annoys a lot of users on this model and indeed it is a shame if that puts them off 'IPS-type' models in the future; they're not all like this, you're right.

I just cancled my order on this monitor due to all the negative experiences everyones been having with glow/bleed or whatever you want to call it.

The thing is I actually still really want this monitor, and I dont know what on earth to do  Its a serious amount of money to me personally, and if I got one that was ship-shape id be over the moon, but im concerned that if I get one and it has issues I will have to pay to send it back.
