ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q 144hz 2560x1440 IPS G-Sync.

Hmm worth just biting the bullet and getting the older TN panel? Won't be as pretty as the IPS but should suffer from less things like backlight bleed/IPS glow?

less glow certainly on a TN Film panel, although you will have to live with more restrictive viewing angles, more colour tone/contrast shift as a result, thicker more grainy AG coating etc. still a very good screen though if you're worried about the IPS glow of the PG279Q

What monitor are you coming from? If you already have TN and that's what you're used to, you'd probably be more than happy with a quality TN. Personally, as I've always owned IPS, I just can't abide TN, it simply can't compete with TN in terms of viewing angles and colour reproduction. It's very frustrating because finding a 100Hz+ IPS 1440p monitor with G-Sync... that's a VERY short list and none of the monitors on it are free of potentially very serious issues. It's a lottery for sure. :(

The thing is, it shouldnt have to be a lottery, surley the manufacturer's should only ship out monitors free of all these issues? especially such expensive high end units.

I often wonder if Asus or whoever watch threads like this and think "wow this sucks, we must do better"?

I dont think so as we are a very very small minority of sales. I would hazard a guess of probably less then 1%. The rest probably think its normal or dont mind.

This is true, although there is a 360+ thread on another overclocking enthusiast forum that reads like a horror story

Has anyone here had a good one yet? would be nice to hear something positive :)

And then they look at the Acer and LG threads and think to themselves..."Nah" :p

Mine is/was almost good. IPS glow is acceptable , the backlight bleed in the top right is pretty minor.

Can't get over the awful uniformity of the screen though. the top 30% ish of the screen is noticeably darker on light coloured/white webpages etc. Adds a brownish tinge to white and is always noticeable.

I've used a few different IPS screens over the years by Dell, Apple etc and no issues at all.

Not a "Premium" panel in my eyes. As a result mine it's going back.

I've had it now with 144hz IPS G-Sync panels. I've personally been through 4 XB270HU's , 3 PG278Q's and now finally this PG279Q.

All of them have had genuine faults including severe IPS glow + BLB, dead pixels , inversion and dirt stuck inside the screen.

Seriously come on... I think us enthusiasts/gamers etc are being taken for a ride with these screens. It's become pretty clear that the panels made but AU Optronics or whoever else is making them cant get it right and quite simply... the tech isn't ready. That or Acer/Asus just can't build them properly.

So yeah I've given up. All the money I've lost and time wasted shipping them was for nothing other than to learn a simple life lesson = "If it looks too good to be true, It probably is"

If you have a decent screen then awesome enjoy it! :)

Me... well I'm going to try ultrawide or something.

I have a Samsung 27" 1440p 60hz PLS panel (I do believe it is this one: http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/it/monitor/professional-monitor/LS27B970DS/EN).

It's a decent monitor in it's own right to be fair, but I am not a fan of the reflective glass front on it.

I'd also like G-Sync, but I am spoilt, 1440p res at 27" is perfect for me.

To be fair I don't really have a powerful enough GPU to power 144hz at the moment at 1440p (780 TI), so if/when I do come to upgrade time I was hoping to get one of the next series of Nvidia cards, along with a proper G-Sync screen, maybe by then they would have ironed out some manufacturing issues (and maybe the price would be less ridiculous!).

No stranger to some IPS glow, I get it now.

Ultrawide seems to suffer IPS glow even worse too given that the corners are further away from the centre.

I suspect these gaming targeted panels carry much larger profit margins than standard consumer panels, probably to pay for the marketing required in part, and probably because they have no intention of attempting to make them a mainstream product anyway.

Ultrawide isn't going to help my u3415 has obvious backlight bleed with dark images in the corners, I'm not fussy at all but its enough to irritate when playing a dark game or when borders are present.

If you must have a perfect panel then perhaps its best to get a more consumer ips 1440p 16:9 panel at 60htz and try to find one with low input latency if it exists. You'll probably find if you spend enough on a decent brand like dell or hp then it'll be perfect.

I'm thinking this is the better idea. I've been wary about dipping into these panels after reading the threads, even though it seems a fairly large proportion of customers don't have these issues or simply don't notice them.

I imagine Apple and Dell get the "cream of the crop" for their own production lines, while Acer/Asus are happy to take less perfect samples, tack on a number of overpriced bells and whistles, slap a gaming brand on it and charge you through the nose for what essentially started life as a sub-par product. Pure conjecture, I suppose, but Hazro and Catleap were doing a similar job and it's not too hard to imagine other manufacturers got some bright ideas too. And looking at the performance issues noted in their threads, a correlation may be evident.

Its not just about taking less than perfect samples. Its the QA of the final product that is the issue. Standards do no seem to be consistent or we wouldnt be getting such a wild difference of panels (if only in minimums).

eg Acer 16 dead Pixel policy, Asus some other dead pixel policy.

Also the screens could be excellent samples but if they build the frame around it shoddy it can cause pressure on the screen and thus BLB. This has been seen by releasing the pressure on the frame (or removing it) and BLB is all but gone.

I cant get my Xperia Z3 Compact to show what I actually see.

On photos the glow on the right looks like its reddish but to my eyes its silvery/grey.
Left side is blueish but not noticable during darker content, to my eyes.

Right corner is a bit annoying though as black turns silver and detail is lost.
Theres no BLB, if I move head to the right (and vice versa) where my right eye is almost at bezel, the glow there is completely gone and theres no other light coming out.

Also the coating makes dark content more annoying, as you can see yourself in the monitor.

ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q

Hello All,

I would like to add my money's worth on this monitor. I do not have any off the problems as has been written previously. I find the monitor to be excellent in all respects and I do not mind paying what I paid for it in fact I had the first Rog Swift and when it started to flicker I sold it and it was bought straight away and the buyer knew it. At the moment I could sit for hours using the screen but as I have a life I have other interests. I bought the PG279Q from the first batch sold by Overclockers and I have no intention of asking for my money back nor to return it. I see nothing wrong with the monitor and if there is then I can live with it. Many thanks for your time.
