ATI 5870 flash to bypass 900/1300 limit

erm...you dont need to flash the card to overclock outside the ccc limits, just change a setting in the msi tool that is all.

<EDIT- saw the age of this thread>

That setting disables powerplay so your card runs at full voltage and max clocks all the time, so if you don't want to mess around with changing profiles and such to get powerplay back, bios update is the way to go.

Flashing voids warranty right?

They claim it does, it's really to cover idiots borking their card with a bad flash.

To be fair though if you've got a second graphics card, you can't permanently break a graphics card due to a bad flash.

There's no way they can tell basically, if you ever need to RMA, just flash it back to the stock bios.

Thanks for the info kyle. I was gonna return my vapor-x and get an asus but if I can flash it then no worries.

Sapphire were kinda stupid giving their card an awesome coolers but restricting the overclocking :/

No they weren't.

As Drunken has already said, it is better to have a [respectable] limit that will annoy a small % of customers than no limit at all and potentially a customer service headeache.

There are two methods around this - MSI Tool and the BIOS flash.

This the bios i put on my 5850 by mistake over 3-4 weeks ago from this page as well i am still running it had no issues at all, although i only at 5870 clocks on it.

I heard people flashing 5750's with 5770 bios to try an enable the extra shaders. It didnt bugger the card, so you should be fine. just shows up as a 5770 with 720 shaders.

For the average consumer it is. Sapphire are using the default limits I assume and not taking their pre-OC into account.

Besides, as I already stated, if you don't like it, flash the bugger. :D

So a 6% overclock should be considered ok for a high end product with an expensive cooler?

It's like limiting an i7 to 2.8Ghz...

I will probably ending up flashing this card depending on what stress this years upcoming games put on it :) atm though it runs MW2 happily at 5760x1080 and that's all that matters :D

ive got 2 5870 vapor's, i think by the time i need to OC them much newer cards will be available. so il leave em as they intended :)

OC'ing will allow for 15-20% increase in performance, as upping the GPU core seems to be pretty linear.
So, around 30% increase with your crossfire.

2 quick questions before i try my hand at this.

Does the bios update work on all 5870's

Will it help stop my card going into Powerplay low power mode.

1.) All that use the normal reference PCB, so I think all of the current 5870's.
2.) You mean 137/300MHZ when using dual screen?. Eyefinity overclocked doesn't flicker for me at 137/300MHZ at 5760x1080.
