ATI cuts 6950 allocation

1GB 6950 would fit in nicely around £250 with the the 2GB 6950 at £300.
Can I get source with that?
If it's any longer than the 5870 I might have to settle on a 580 (if I can lay my hands on one).

Gibbo has already said it's going to be £350 - £400 for the 6970.
This is in line with the 5870 at launch (now £180!).

AMD are making huge margins on the 6870 currently.
The die size is 255m^2.
It's primary targets are the GTX 460 and 470, with die sizes of 366m^2 and 529mm^2 respectively.
If Nvidia are still turning a profit on selling 460's for ~£150, then we can only assume that AMD are making ample profit from the ~£200 6870 cards.
AMD could argue that the gap in the £200 - £300 region can be filled by Crossfire solutions (dual 6850 or 6870), this also makes SLI GTX460 an alternative for this price range.
We won't be seeing a new set of 28nm graphics card until the end of 2011 at the earliest.
TMSC say 28nm production will start in Q2 2011 but most chips require at least one respin.

It's very unlikely IMO. I would opt for HD6970 being 12-15% faster than GTX580 and HD6950 approximately 9-10% slower. That is assuming that HD6970 is 65% faster than HD6870 compared to 45% for GTX580 and the difference between HD6970 and HD6950 is around 20-25%.
That is very untrue, HD5870 was launched at $399, Gibbo's quoted pricing suggests $479-529 which is a lot higher than HD5870 launch prices.

If AMD have volume to shift (and nVidia have little to none) and a faster card they can price it up, consumers will pay more money for a faster card especially if they have a hard time finding stock of the alternative.
If AMD were doing business the way you suggest why is the 6870 more expensive than the competing cards from nVidia?
Because the competing cards are EOL?

My bad, the price seems very low historically!
They are still available in volume, still the main competition and only recently went EOL.
Well the 570 won't be £200 we can be sure of that. The 560 might be.
No but the 6870 is unlikely to provide much competition for the 570.
All Cayman based cards are to come with 2GB of RAM, so there shouldn't be any 1GB ones.
The 570 will compete with the 6950 though.
