If AMD claimed that HD6900 will their new r300
it gotta be something Special
I've still ONLY seen that from Fud, without any other sources, basically anything direct from AMD I'd actually assume that was disinformation from Fud, as in raise expectations just to see them fail. Wouldn't be altogether surprised if thats what Raven was doing aswell
Thing is, R300 was a piece of excellent design , it also gave great performance. In terms of gpu design and manufacturing, its equally impressive to make a bigger core with a lot more performance, a same size core with a decent improvement, or a much smaller core with about the same speed. From a design and achievement perspective they are all technically just as good as each other, and just as difficult to achieve(actually, the more performance you can get per mm2 is more impressive than just making a core bigger with more shaders, the 5870 really was absolutely nothing special other than coping VERY well with a crap process).
We really don't know, I wouldn't be surprised if Cayman was 20% bigger, with 1920 shaders and very very fast, I also wouldn't be surprised if it had circa 1600, was faster but marginally smaller than Cypress, theres to date, no confirmation its 1920 shaders, or really, much of anything.
The more hyped up its performance gets, the more of a let down it will be though, and I don't wonder if thats not the intention of a couple of posters here, and certainly the intention of some websites.
Thats the one downside to ultra secrecy, at some stage the hype gets TOO big, and your product can't ever be anything but a let down.
Simple fact is, on 40nm process, in the same node a large performance boost will be incredibly impressive.
