ATI cuts 6950 allocation

Spoke with my friend at a well known supplier of ATI cards

Had the response when asking about price and performance

15th is now confirmed - pricing should be around £299 plus VAT for the 6970 - We are doing one shipped in a Metal Briefcase with a coupon for Battlefield Bad Company 2 - Vietnam in the box - this will be around £20 more and only a few available - I think 50 in UK altogether - but looks awesome !!

Nothing confirmed about performance as yet - but the figures you are quoting seem to be there or there abouts - maybe a bit less with a pinch of reality - but again thermals should also be better etc......

hi mate I see you have a 5870, any grey screen of death? I have read so many threads about this issue...

Sounds good so far, But you say nothing confirmed on performance yet, but you then go on to say the quoted figures are there or there abouts. What do you base that on ?

i said to my friend there are rumours going around that the 6970 is 30% + faster than a 580 and wondered what the price would be.

He then replied with the above.

obviously different games will differ on performance etc.

i'm only posting what he has mentioned.

personally if this price he is quoting is true and it beats a 580 in the majority then ATI/AMD are on for a winner again

Nice, looking good then. I could do with something new to play with!

Well, in some ways I hope so too but I think it'll be just over that. I've got the slow cooker out just in case!

300 plus vat is 352.50 which is close enough to Gibbo's 360-400 to be totally believable.

That's still a lot of money in the 'current climate' and if the rumours are true that amd are churning out these things, then i reckon that's still enough to make them plenty to celebrate about

whispers *go red team*

i suppose we have to weigh in the retailers mark up on these things. which if the performance figures are true they undoubtably will.

so a £350 incl VAT card could well become a £400 incl VAT card and people will pay it because it's better than a 580 (supposidly) which is sat at £50 more.

£299 + VAT seems to be the recommended retail price. Any retailer worth their salt will be undercutting its competitors if they want to sell more than their competitors so I expect prices to be just around £340 for the cheaper AIB cards (Powercolor) and £360 for the higher quality brands (Sapphire).

That almost confirms my thoughts and means that the 6950 1GB will ship for £250 (inc vat) or thereabouts and the 6950 2GB for around £300 (inc vat) making the 570 look like cheap ham in between them.
