If the 6970 is that much behind the 580, then it's a fail. Though I have my doubts whether that slide is accurate, be it a fake, or AMD purposefully misleading (just like they did with the 4 series) and they're comparing price rather than performance.

Why would it be shocking for the 6970 to be behind the 580 by a fair amount? I always assumed it would be, but that the 6990 would be nicely ahead of it for a reasonable amount of cash. This is exactly what happened with the 480s and the 5970s.

What's with the sudden increase in people registering just to stir things up in the graphics card forum. Screams of alt-accounts to me.

The reason it would shock me is the gtx580 is only 45% faster than a 6870. So say that the 6970 is 10% behind a gtx580 then amd only have 35% performance difference between there top and mid range. Then consider the 6950, is it only going to be 15% faster than a 6870. Amd need to give there top end some decent gains over the mid range to make them viable at there price points.

Look at nvidia for instance there top end gtx580 is probably somewhere in the region of 65% or more faster than there mid end gtx460.

It just would not make sense to me for amd to leave such a small gap between high and mid range.

I myself lurked here for a number of years before I started posting so I can sympathise. The reason I brought up the number of posts thing at all was because I've seen a few people weigh in on this thread with new accounts and post inflammatory comments. Given that only a few months ago the mods had to intervene to stop the constant flaming and arguments, I was a bit suspicious.

back on topic: when is the NDA due to be lifted/the cards available? I'm weirdly tempted to upgrade, despite my 5870 not struggling in anything (aside from eyefinity).

From what I understand I think NDA is the 15? but I could be wrong.

I too have a 5870 and really really wanted the 6970 to beat the 580. I mean there still is a chance but recent info says otherwise.
