ATI cuts 6950 allocation

AMD official slide said, that GTX 580 faster than 6970. LOL.
FAIL. FAIL.

TROLL.. Stupid TROLL

GTX 580 with TDP ~240W faster than 6970 with TDP ~240W. LOL

Because that input was really useful.

If indeed the 6970 is slightly slower than the GTX 580 you know it's gonna weigh in at £100 less, and there will be lots of stock to soak up Nvidia's inability to produce enough of it's cards.

How much is 5/10/15% worth to you? Answer honestly... £30 per 5%? or maybe £50? Are you playing at the sort of resolutions that require these cards, or would you only buy for the 'I have a shiny new card factor'?

If above diagram is real a lot of people will be very happy they did not sell their 580's. There will be a few pats on back at NVidia as well.

FrenchTart, my weak sarcasim aside(lol), I see your point too, I hope I didnt stoke the flames too much.
From what I understand I think NDA is the 15? but I could be wrong.

I too have a 5870 and really really wanted the 6970 to beat the 580. I mean there still is a chance but recent info says otherwise.

15th? Pah..I want info now, damnit :p I guess I'll have to be patient...

I'll be interested to see how the 6970s perform at 3600x1920 (3x24" monitors in portrait mode). I'm hoping if the comments about them having 2GB of ram are true the cards should be a nice improvement over the 5870s.

Ignore the nvidia fanboy troll, just report his posts as I have done and probably others have as well.

Probably an already existing member who created a new account just to flame the ATI cards and provoke a reaction.

For once, it has been a decent discussion so far until he posts that

Also why does it really matter if the 6970 is slower than the 580 by 10-20%, because it will cost a lot less than the 580, better cooling and power consumption as well as being quieter probably and it will be able to play games on max settings smoothly at 1920x1080.

So I don't see the problem tbh if they are priced a lot cheaper etc.

As others have stated it just doesnt make sense for amd to make a card (6970) that is only 35 percent faster than the 6870. So a 6950 is only going to be 15-20 percent faster than amds mid range card? thats abunch of hog wash.

If the 6970 is that much behind the 580, then it's a fail. Though I have my doubts whether that slide is accurate, be it a fake, or AMD purposefully misleading (just like they did with the 4 series) and they're comparing price rather than performance.

AmD haven't had the fastest single GPU card (delays to Fermi aside) ever since they took over ATI back in 2006 so I doubt anything will change now. AMD obviously target value for for money and profitability over the pride of having the an outright bemouth that's expensive to produce. Its the price that AMD set that will determine the success of this card.

It matters because these cards have been hyped up so much that everyone anticipate a Ferminator. There is no guarentee that 6970 will have better cooling or be quieter than the GTX580, you only need to look as for as 6800 vs GTX460 to see that. The coolers on the 5x0 cards are actually most impressive, much better than anything ATI has produced so far.

I tend to buy whatever top dog card is out at the time. If the 6970 is best I will get one, if GTX580 is best it will save me the bother.

edit: There is also slight reluctance on my part to purchase a £350-£400 card that costs half as much to produce as a similar £400 card which I already own. I feel that NVidia "virtually" provides better value for money. Acquiring a £400 for £400 somehow feels better than getting £200's worth of card for £350, even if performance is pretty similar.

I am not confirming anything. But I am writing my specs out for the cards and want to try and make sure they are spot on.

Wow... Seriously, if you want to make sure the specs are spot on, you really need to wait for the official specification to be released (if you don't have it already).

We have to make sure punters understand the description. If the card is for example 1536 shaders based on a new architecture, we need to get across to punter that is actually equivalent to a 1920 shader equipped 5870.

Well a 1536 shader architecture based on a "4D" configuration is NOT EQUIVALENT to a 1920 shader architecture based on the previous "5D" configuration. According to AMD it "offers similar performance", but only rigorous benchmarking will determine whether the performance of a 4D shader group is better, equal or worse than the old 5D shader group.

But none of this is important, because even if the 4D shaders perform better than the old 5D shaders, it is still incorrect to say that they are equivalent!.

It's a completely different architectural configuration. If you're looking for an accurate description that still entices punters, then you can say that it is roughly xxx% faster than a 5870, where xxx is to be determined from early reviews or your own internal testing (likely to be around 40% or so).

Every new card at the enthusiast levels gets hyped up, and its usually just the consumers who do this, unless Nvidia have something big then we know about it.

I don't think AMD themselves have said much at all in relation to performance of this card compared to the 580. Was it AMD who said that this was going to be the new r300 (9700pro) or was that just another rumour?

Well I'm still up for it being faster than a 580 but even if it's not AMD will price it way below the 580 and rely on their 6990 to take the fastest card on the planet crown which they still currently hold lol, this will obviously destroy the 580. Nvidia still have no answer to the 5970 let alone the 6990 and I think AMD are not bothered about taking the fastest single GPU when they can develop dual GPU cards that Nvidia currently can't combat.

actually they did (amd), they said it was gioing to be the next r300.

Not calling you a liar or anything but can you link to where this was confirmed by AMD?
I only saw this news on the highly dubious Fudzilla and that certainly isn't a ringing endorsment as to its truth!
