Atmospheric games. What're your recommendations for anyone?

An oldie, but some of the Quake custom maps available right now are brilliant. There's plenty of Lovecraftian influences in there. :)

Simon O'Callaghan makes some particularly good maps.

was going to back to this the otherday,

does it still hold up as a good game all this time later?, dont want to kill my last thoughts of it?

Yeah it's still fab, still has that creepy Twin Peaks / Twilight Zone style atmosphere and in my opinion the graphics are still fairly pretty. :)

Ninja Theory is not an indie studio by any stretch of the imagination, they are a major console developer with millions in publishing dollars.
My bad, this is true. I should have mentioned when making this game it was proposed as an 'Independent AAA title', so what you would expect of a high end AAA title, only more focused and on a much tighter and smaller budget.

Looks like the incoming game Debris may be another for the list.

Apparently there's a demo, but not been able to find it.

Turns out Debris has four different endings. Released today.

Bioshock and Witcher 1 are the only ones that I've played that springs to mind.

Alan Wake would have been up there but I detested the whole nightmare element which, I know is basically the whole game but during its build up and hype, I was expecting a fully open world town to investigate at my own leisure.

Another for the list.
Osiris: New Dawn.

Only a little atmospheric in outside world (although not far into game yet) but inside the mine is definitely atmospheric.

Dark Souls 1 has atmospheric environments with minimal storytelling. It has that gnarly, worn-in desolate feel that the sequels lack.

Yes, the first Dark Souls did nail that desolate atmospheric feeling exceptionally well. Such a well-crafted world, which really nailed that ubiquitous feeling of despair and decay.

Praise the Sun!

I'd definitely also second System Shock 2 as one of the most atmospheric games of all times.

Also the original Resident Evil. That may have been the first time I felt haunted by a game's atmopshere.
