Audi owners in here!

Quite common I believe, I've had to replace my passenger door lock mechanism a year ago. Apparently the solder dries out. With mine it would occasionally unlock but would always lock when I had manually opened the door.

I know that the A6 lock mechanisms fit my S3 so the chances are they are the same on the A4 too.

Thanks, makes me a little more confident taht it won't cost me a fortune as apparently if it is the door controller, you have to replace the entire metal panel behind the plastic trim that contains all the controllers and window motor

What's the view on the D4 A8 at the moment? I'm currently looking at 7-series and Jag XJ but plenty of folk keep telling me I need to look at an A8 too. I had a D3 A8 a few years back but it was so shockingly unreliable that I've kind of sworn off Audi. However, things change and I think it would be silly to rule out a D4.

Not sure if this would be the right place to ask, but are there any B7 RS4 owners in here? I test drove one over the weekend and am considering buying one, but wondered how much typical annual servicing costs are, what to look out for etc? Will no doubt be more than my current 330 M Sport, but good to have a rough idea of how much more.

Yes but it isn't the bargain £450 as suggested by yourself. Just pointing that out that, in reality, it is just about £1,000 more...

I can watch DVDs on the one in the TT. :p

To put into context, the tech pack on the TT costs near £2k...which only gets you sat nav/wifi stuff. The actual virtual cockpit is standard on the TT.

So it still sounds like a good deal on the other Audi cars if its only a grand.

It's not "only" a grand, I think something has got lost in translation here.

The Tech Pack is £995. This is MMI 3GP Touch, with the music interface, "audi phone box", voice control, Audi Connect (36-month service).

Tech Pack Advanced adds Virtual Cockpit (and nothing else) to the above, for another £400.

What nobody seems to be able to tell me (from Audi that is), is if the virtual cockpit ONLY allows things that can already be seen on the MMI display, or if there is additional functionaility. This is because on the S3, you have no coolant temp gauge (don't ask, you get a boost gauge instead). You can however, on the standard dials, get the oil temp/pressure to display on the DIS, using the lap-timer function. There is no oil or coolant temp display on the MMI.

I don't want to be in a position whereby I have a nice overkill 12" display, but no temperature information at all.

I get oil temp showing on the screen which has trip computer etc. Imagine it will be the same on other cars?

I think the TTS gets boost gauges etc.

I'd imagine other than branding it would be identical to that in the TTS, but seeing as no one actually seems to be able to tell me, nor is there a brochure for the facelift A3 yet (a bit poor considering it's been available to pre-order since May, and some have been delivered already) I'm not going to take that assumption as gospel.

Oh well.

My dad has one, floret silver, sport model (top trim) with google maps thingy, 360 cameras and some other stuff

If you look at one, ensure you go for smaller wheels as the current 20s noticeably worsened the ride over the 19s we had on the previous D4 before we got this one

Ride is still excellent however, perhaps a little too much tyre roar with the P-zeros. Bose is considerably better than standard, B&O IMO not worth the extra over Bose unless you really want the rising tweeters at the front which look ace

Interior is fantastic but does look aging now against the new S class, the new 7 series doesn't do it for me as it just looks like a stretched F10. Can't stand i-drive as well, MMI is very easy to use
Against the F01 7 series interior hands down the D4 beats it. F01 interior simply not special enough imo for a luxo-barge

The TTS gets a different view option compared to mine (which it also has). TTS view is with one big centre dial with digital speedo in the middle, then I think nav on the right and media on the left, which is quite cool.

0:47s, bottom left of the display - does that look like a coolant temp display?

I'm not going to bother with the virtual cockpit, I've looked at the videos/images and I think I simply prefer the normal dials. All the fancy stuff can be seen on the center display screen anyway. Maybe I'm just getting old :D

Tech pack on the current 8V also includes a better resolution screen, not sure if the new A3 has this is standard or if it's part of the tech pack

Oh well.

I wouldn't buy an S3 without the virtual cockpit, it is excellent in the cars I have driven with it.

S3 does get boost level, coolant and oil temperature on the display. (Pictured in the review)

RS cars servicing is split into 10k (minor) and 20k (major).

Minor - The cost is around £350 from both good independents (Unit20, MRC, QST etc) and from Audi themselves.

Major - The cost is around £600 from both indies and Audi

Issues - There's only 1 main issue, Carbon Coking of the engine from the FSi setup which, in bad cases, can rob 70+hp but tends to average out at around a 30-40hp loss. I'd budget around £500 every 20-30k miles for a clean.

The following aren't issues but you should be aware of them - very dated interior equipment, the Sat Nav (RNS-E) is 5 digit only with very limited bluetooth. The "sports seats" were a hot-spot for criminals and cost £19k to replace (shocking) which also raised the insurance quite a bit although the thefts seem to have calmed down a lot now. The front brake discs wear very quickly are cost £800 to replace.

Positives - It's got the best handling "feel" of any RS car by mile but thats not saying a great deal TBF. They look fantastic, sound amazing, hold their price quite well at the moment and a re-map (whilst not doing a great deal for peak figures) really brings it to life.

Biggest problem with the car is the DRC suspension, if its not been upgraded to the V3 kit or its leaking you are looking at stupidly high bills to fix.
