Audi owners in here!

Will check out the Golfs if that is the case then :) We don't mind going a bit older but nothing too far down the scale, I think 2009 would be the limit. Nah, not fussy on the keyring, as I probably won't be driving it anyway! It will be her main commuter to work and back etc...

Thanks for the advice, Anymore opinions?

I'll echo what Fox has said. A 2011-2012 A3 is a very bad idea. If it has to be an A3, either pay more and get a current generation one, or spend far less and get an early facelift (2008 onwards).

Otherwise, yes look at the Golf MK6.

I bought an Audi A6 7 weeks ago and thought I would give my views on it so far.

Car purchased: C7 November 2011 Audi A6 saloon 2.0D 177 S-Line with Tech pack and 19" RS4 alloys
Mileage covered: 4200
Average MPG since purchase: 45
Best MPG on a run: 53
Previous owned: 2008 8th Gen Accord, 2005 Volvo S60, 2003 Audi TT 225, 2004 Toyota Avensis, 2004 Fiat Punto, 2001 Ford Focus , W reg Suzuki Swift

Overall I am very pleased with the car, and it is by far the best car I have had. I will happily drive 500+ miles in one day then jump back in it to go out in the evening.

What I like about the car
- The cabin is extremely well built, with not a single squeak/rattle and feels like a premium place to be, particularly compared to the Accord I had previously
- The layout of the dash/controls is very logical and works well
- The sat nav works well, is simple to control and the MMI touch input makes it very quick to enter postcodes
- The voice activated handsfree is the most reliable I have seen, and negates the need to press any buttons to call a contact, read a text message or even reply to a text message
- The heated seats go VERY hot if you want them to which is great now the weather is colder
- The tech pack dash screen in front of the steering wheel works well, giving clear, simple information including sat nav directions
- The boot space is very good for a saloon, with an opening that is the width of the boot, and fold away hooks for shopping/bags
- The ride quality is actually better than I expected for an Audi with S-Line and 19" alloys (I almost asked the dealer to swap the 19s for standard 18s before purchase given the mileage I do)
- Cruise control works great, is very accurate and even applys the brakes to maintain the correct speed
- Buttons on the drivers door to lock the rear door and window are great when I pick up my nephew
- The auto brake works well, avoiding the need to use the handbrake in traffic

What I don't like
The tech pack has the ability to go online, use google maps and remotely download destinations etc, but this only works if your phone is RSAP enabled which my work phone is not. It works great with my normal phone but I had to root my phone and install a different bluetooth driver to get it to work
- The car has a slot for a sim card which I plugged one in for data only, however this disables the bluetooth
- The keyless ignition (which is standard) is pointless without the optional keyless ignition. I have to get the key out of my pocket to get in the car, then have to find somewhere to put the key once I am in, then hunt around for it before getting back out the car. It should be both keyless entry/ignition or neither
- The cruise control stalk is too low, and can catch your leg in certain seating positions
- The steering column is very low and in my favored driving position catches my knee when I change gear so I have had to adjust the wheel higher than I would like
- There is no quick way to zoom out on the sat nav and clearly see different options for detouring. I have to change the map from 3D to 2D view, then click to change the orientation to north facing to get a standard map view
- The seats would benefit from inflatable side bolsters to hold you in position, they are comfortable but you can move around a bit when driving

Your MPG sounds somewhat concerning - 45mpg average from a 2.0 TDI with record of just 53mpg? Does it not make you wish you'd just gone for a 6 cylinder given you seem to get no real economy advantage out of the 2 litre?

Well she went and put a deposit down on a year old A3 this morning! ... her money I suppose!

:(

It's a nice car, but it's equally as nice as a 2005 A3 for £6k. Because it's the same car. Audi must have been rubbing their hands together at managing to get 10 years out of the same platform - something thats usually unheard of in the premium sector.

Agreed... anyone buying a 2011-2012 model needs to be warned about this as there is no reason to buy one other than Audi trying to get rid of stock due to a completely new A3 (not a facelift) came out late 2012. You see some of those 2012 a3's on pistonheads for 15-20k and i have no idea how they can ask that kind of money for one i really don't!!!

Can be resolved by having a data SIM in a 3G router, connected to the AMI via a DLink DUB-E100 (revision A2), and setting the MMI to route via usb-eth (hidden menu). I now have GEMMI (Google Earth MMI) on a non-GEMMI equipped car, and retain the use of my Bluetooth :)

Surely you can just zoom out? Granted I don't have MMI Touch, but as far as I'm aware, MMI 3G+ is touch, without the touch. Just scroll the main wheel and zoom out?

Before purchasing I did seriously look at the 3.0L but they were out of budget unless I went for an SE. The extra purchase cost and the additional fuel cost combined pushed it over budget.

In honesty since purchasing the car I haven't even thought about it.

Cheers, I will look into that for getting data in the car. I have a data contract on my Ipad that I barely use so could use that.

Yes I can just zoom out, but on the 3D view it is that angled it's hard to see and I have it set to face direction of travel where as I like it to face north when I am looking at alternative routes (i.e. like the "view map" option on tomtom).

Paradigm?

I want to add the AMI module to my car, you did it to your C6 didn't you? What part number will i need (2006 A6 C6), and is it plug and play or do i need VAGCOM to set it up? Anything else i should know?

Thx

Not got part numbers to hand, I can check when I get to work in the morning. From memory though, you need the AMI unit, the glovebox, a fibre optic coupling, and then a bit of VCDS recoding.

Hardest part is removing the glovebox, which isn't that hard at all in reality.

Indeed, nevermind! at least it gives me an excuse to spend an equal amount on a car in a year or so time ;)

Went to see it last night, and to be fair its very nice. lovely colour (scuba blue), 62 plate, 12.5k miles.

drives a lot differently to my little Corsa thats for sure. lol

Yeah this one is £15k. with our deposit though, the finance is relatively cheap. She'll be saving a hell of a lot on road tax and fuel too.

That's not too bad tbh mine was 26k and is 6 months old now so for a year old car could be worse and nice colour too!

Regardless what people say on here etc long as your/she is happy with it at the end of the day that's all that matters :)

I guess you are right. I'll rarely drive it, other than weekends if i'm honest! but yup, she seems really happy with it and so long as she's smiling it keeps her off my back :D

Although it has made me want a new car, must resist for the time being!
