Australian GP 2009 - Race 1/17 (NOT in HD BTW)

Just out of interest, where are those fuel levels from?

I've put them in order, if anyone's interested:

Kazuki Nakajima 612.5
Robert Kubica 650
Felipe Massa 654
Lewis Hamilton 655
Kimi Raikkonen 655.5
Nico Rosberg 657
Sebastian Vettel 657
Jarno Trulli 660
Mark Webber 662
Seb Bourdais 662.5
Jenson Button 664
R Barrichello 666.5
Timo Glock 670
Sebastian Beumi 675.6
Fernando Alonso 680.7
Adrian Sutil 684.5
G Fisichella 689
Heikki Kovaleinen 690.6
Nick Heidfeld 691
Nelson Piquet 694.1

Ah yeah, forgot about that. Is it the same engine as the one McLaren are using? Just wondering as if it is then if McLaren got the difuser on there car (providing it didn't mess up there existing aero dynamics) they could be just as quick as Brawn.

No, its highly unlikely. McLaren have KERS which is weight in the car where you dont want it. It really looks like KERS + the tyre changes have screwed up the car balance.

I thought KERS was supposed to improve things?

KERS is to appease the tree huggers, even though its development and implementation has been more damaging to the environment if anything. I dont think its implementation is good enough yet, but it may be different in the race environment. You only have to look at who has KERS and who doesnt and their respective grid positions to see a correlation.

Yeah, can they not just remove it from the car, or is it not as simple as that? I take it they can't or they would have.

Fantastic session. Looks like it's gonna be a good season!

Loving EJ and DC, not gelling perfectly but think they are both great guys, and Jake didn't do as bad a job as I expect.

I reckon that Barichello is running slightly higher fuel load, but serious grats to button, didn't think he could pull that off :)

Autosport have them up if you want to check them:

Surely that doesn't take the driver weight into account? So it's only a very rough indication.

e.g heavier drivers will have a light car, looking like they have more fuel? (Kubica looks like he's fuelled light, but he weighs more than most the other drivers?)

I'm probably wrong though. :)

The car + driver have to to equal 605kg. Obviously the lighter the driver is the more ballast they have to use to increase the weight. However this ballast can be placed strategically to improve the cars balance. You then add the fuel on top of the 605kg.

Yes, this does mean Massa and Raikkonen move up the grid. Evidence of a pro-Ferrari bias with the stewards and FIA? I'll leave you to decide!*

Hehe. I was thinking along those lines. All we need is a 2 more teams to have their cars moved to the back of the grid and the Ferraris wont be so far behind. ;)

I still feel that both Ferraris are carrying a lot of fuel and 8th and 9th isnt a true reflection of their actual performance. Reliability and extraordinary situations excepted, there is no reason why we shouldnt see a Ferrari on the podium tomorrow.

The BMW (of Kubica) has slotted in exactly as I expected, though Vettel is a real surprise. I would be shocked if he finishes on the podium tomorrow (barring DNFs and extraordinary situations).

Does anyone have any ideas as to why the Ferrari and Red Bull cars were protested by Williams?

Apparently their rear wings are fluctuating in proportion to speed, this isn't allowed.

At high speed the rear wing angle decreases, reducing drag. Then at lower speeds the rear wing returns to original position of increased angle, enhancing the downforce at the rear.

The favourite for tomorrow has to be Button, he has more fuel than Barrichello and out qualified him by 0.3 of a second. Can't wait for the race!

Hope RBR's rear wing is legal.

I reckon Button will win if he can hold his position into the first corner, and they get the strategy right. Then I reckon Rubbens will be second with a Ferrari in third, possibly Massa.
